Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) at Old Dominion University seeks a dynamic physician executive to serve as its next Chair of Otolaryngology. This is a unique opportunity to usher a well-established department with a strongly positive institutional impact of excellence into a new era, with the recent integration of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) into Old Dominion University (ODU), a large, urban, public research institution. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative academic physician who will work closely with leadership of the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences and the university, as well as with health systems, department chairs, faculty, staff, graduate medical trainees, students, and alumni.

The Department of Otolaryngology at EVMS is dedicated to advancing the science of disorders related to the ear, head, and neck. The department provides superior education for medical students and residents, emphasizing a patient-centered approach to care. Their comprehensive training program covers various subspecialties, including otology/neurotology, head and neck oncology, pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, skull base surgery, rhinology, allergy, audiology, and speech pathology. The department is committed to delivering outstanding, compassionate care to patients while preparing graduates to practice general otolaryngology or pursue advanced training in their chosen subspecialty.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will work collaboratively with hospital leadership to advance the department's mission of excellence in patient care, medical education, and innovative research in Otolaryngology. The Chair will supervise all faculty members as well as the Department Administrator.

The ideal candidate for the position of the new Chair should be an outstanding listener, seasoned communicator and approachable mentor. The ability to build trust and rapport, not only with faculty, staff and students, but also with university colleagues and collaborating health systems, will be paramount. Because of the community-based nature of EVMS and ODU, EVMS values community engagement, and the next chair should embody a commitment to community service.

Applicants must be board certified in otolaryngology, possess outstanding leadership skills and administrative experience garnered in an academic medical center setting, and possess a solid track record of commitment to clinical care, education and research. Candidates should also support a strong commitment to advancing diversity in academic medicine.
