The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC seek an Assistant or Associate Professor, Appointment Stream, to serve as Medical Director, System Antimicrobial Stewardship.

The Medical Director is to develop, implement, and sustain Antimicrobial Stewardship strategies for all UPMC hospitals that align with the Joint Commission standards and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the CDC's guidance on Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs. This physician will serve as the partner to the System Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacy Director, the Director of Infectious Diseases Improvement and Clinical Research Innovation, and the Senior Medical Director of Infectious Disease Quality and Outcomes as system co-leaders for Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Core functions:

  • Defining and measuring success of the Antimicrobial Stewardship program
  • Developing system clinical guidance
  • Meeting with local pharmacists and physicians for antimicrobial training and best practices
  • Leverage the electronic health record to perform prospective audit with feedback and prior authorization of antimicrobials

The ideal candidate is a mid- or late-career physician with experience in implementing quality improvement initiatives and engaging as an opinion leader in motivating stakeholders. The position affords the opportunity to be part of a motivated and valued team in a multifacility organization that prioritizes high-quality and high-value care.

Associated clinical requirements would be 25% of time, approximately eleven weeks of inpatient consultation or equivalent, with flexibility to structure all or part of clinical time as ambulatory care.

Minimum requirements:

  • Hold an unrestricted MD/DO Pennsylvania medical license
  • Board eligible/board certified in Infectious Diseases
  • Training and experience in infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship
  • An assistant professor should have demonstrated teaching ability, experience in advanced study and research, or professional experience of a kind that would enable them to make an academic contribution. An associate professor will have a strong experience with an impactful scholarship, a local, regional, and developing national/international reputation, effectiveness as a teacher, and service.
