SECTION CHIEF, HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY: The Section Chief, Hematology/Oncology provides effective leadership of the clinical operations and staff of the Hematology/Oncology section on a day-to-day basis. The Section Chief works cooperatively with Service Chiefs, Section Chiefs, Medical Center management, and both clinical and administrative employees to move the medical center, Medical Service, and the Hematology/Oncology Section toward achieving mission, goals and objectives in patient care, education, and research. Specialized Experience for Hematology/Oncology Physician includes:
- Interpret mutational and molecular genetic testing to guide chemotherapeutic agent prescribing. Complete life sustaining therapy conferences with patients and family members Assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions treat diseases and disorders of the blood, spleen, lymph glands, and immunologic system, such as anemia, clotting disorders, sickle cell disease, hemophilia, leukemia, and lymph nodes.
- Administration of chemotherapeutic agents and biological response modifiers through all therapeutic routes
- Apheresis procedures
- Analyze blood tests manually including blood count, including platelets and white cell differential
- Diagnostic lumbar puncture
- Performing bone marrow aspirates, bone marrow biopsies, and touch preparations as well as interpretation of bone marrow biopsies
- Diagnostic and Therapeutic paracentesis
- Management of indwelling venous access catheters
The Section Chief:
- Takes ownership of providing excellent patient care to patients and education to trainees.
- Attends monthly Medical Service Section Chief Meetings with at 80% participation rate and assigns a delegate to attend if needed.
- Organizes staff meetings for area of responsibility at least once a month. Minutes from these meetings will roll up to Section Chief Meeting and are reported out quarterly.
- Communicates both to staff and to leadership. Communications will include situational awareness, provide issue briefs, and weekly huddle with Chief of Medicine.
- May be asked to serve as acting as Service Chief for the Medical Service when the Service Chief is on leave or on clinical service.
- Ensures timely responses to all suspense actions and requests for record reviews.
- Reviews E-mail daily at minimum and maintains remote access and encryption.
- Ensures staff consistently enter document patient safety events.
- Participates in section, service and/or medical center committees.
- The Section Chief, Hematology/Oncology works under the supervision of the Chief of Medical Service.
- Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm
