Located in the heart of West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) can be found on 175 acres in historic Berkeley County and has a service area of more than 70,000 Veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The Medical Center, part of the VA Capitol Health Care Network (VISN 5), offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health and rehabilitation medicine. Patient care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers that follows the patient's care both as an inpatient and an outpatient. Duties: The Chief of Surgical Services oversees all aspects of the Surgical Service Department at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, including quality assurance, quality improvement, budget and fiscal management, human resource management, strategic planning, and planning development. The Chief of Surgery assures that the clinical and administrative functions are integrated to provide optimum utilization of available resources.

Major Duties:
  1. Participate in the operating room commensurate with technical abilities.
  2. Provides quality clinical care and services with regard to customer satisfaction.
  3. Provides comprehensive care of ambulatory patients in the outpatient clinic, inpatients, and patients presenting to the Emergency Department by performing clinical examinations, managing new patient consultations, diagnosis, and treatments.
  4. Ensures completion of encounters and operative notes.
  5. Assumes the responsibility for the overall management of the Martinsburg VA Surgical Service and ensures the service functions as an integrated care delivery care system, providing patient-focused surgical services for veterans.
  6. Completes medical record documentation and ensures subordinates complete medical records within a timely manner and in accordance with current VA guidelines.
Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred to and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently, employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
  1. 1. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  2. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  3. Preferred Experience: Board Certified
