Job Summary and Qualifications
The Chief Academic Officer will be the GME leader of the HCA enterprise-wide initiatives related to medical students, residents and faculty educational and research opportunities. This will include national grand rounds and didactic learning opportunities that will be rolled out to all residents and faculty across the Atlantic, National and American Groups. The position will work to bring in nationally recognized speakers as well as HCA leaders who will inform and engage our GME programs on a variety of subject matters that will be both scientific and healthcare administration in nature. While in-person or face to face activities will be part of the educational program, many lectures will need to be delivered via a distance learning format that the CAO will need to create or secure for HCA. This position will also work with the existing research infrastructure at HCA to spearhead the ACGME required research initiatives for residents and GME faculty. Establish strong relationships with key academic institutions.
Reports To: President of GME
GME DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Under the direction of the President of GME, this position will work to design a curriculum that engages nationally recognized subject-matter experts to provide medical education to 70+ facilities and soon to be over 5000 residents in the HCA GME programs.
- Reporting directly to the President of GME, this position will be the primary driver creating and implementing the needed enterprise-wide distance learning educational program for all of the GME programs for HCA
- The position will create subject matter committees from across the GME and HCA system and work with them to determine the needed lectures and presentations that would be relevant for program specific groups as well as presenters and programs for the entire GME compliment of learners.
- The CAO will become a liaison to the HCA CME structure and work with that group to ensure we are providing CME where appropriate for our attendees.
- The CAO will coordinate with various HCA service line leaders to collaborate on programs we push out to the residents and GME faculty.
- In addition to medical and program specific education, the CAO will work with others in the GME Corporate office to help with annual resident orientation.
- While coordinating the enterprise-wide educational activity, the CAO will also work to set up a structure for resident research activities.
- In conjunction with the HCA Research Organization, this role will help connect Division Leadership to the Research Opportunities at HCA.
- Where needed, the CAO will create educational and training opportunities to inform Program Directors and Residents how to do research within the HCA system.
- In cooperation with the Division and Hospital ADME and Program Directors, facilitate the rollout of information to all Graduate Medical Education programs regarding Educational and Research opportunities and programs.
- In cooperation with the leadership in the field, establishes the needed playbook to disseminate needed information.
- Under the over site of the President of GME will work to implement a national Grand Rounds series working directly with Hospital administration within each division to create a rotational schedule of Grand Rounds hosts and key speakers relevant to expert areas of specialty and education.
- The role exists to facilitate the implementation of and understanding of best practices to our constituents in the field regarding GME Research Policy and Process.
- The position will also be expected to travel to the Divisions and Hospitals on behalf of the President of GME to handle a variety of GME related matters.
- Work effectively with hospital and division senior leadership to meet the operational needs of the roll out and building of the GME programs across the divisions
- Facilitate the development of resident specific policies and procedures related to research activity
- Collaborate strongly with hospital GME Teams who will be point of contact for research related activity and scholarly activity.
- Manage the weekly/monthly operations and training for programs related to Educational or Research related activity
- Where needed, create pathways to the needed IRBs
EDUCATION:
- MD, DO, or PhD required
EXPERIENCE:
- 15 years of increasing responsibility in GME or Medical Education centric positions
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the day to day needs of a Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs
- Knowledge of the ACGME requirements for GME programs related to research
- Knowledge of HCA operations, organizational policies, procedures, systems and objectives
- Knowledge of GME accreditation and compliance requirements
- Ability to use various computer systems and applications
- Ability to work within team environments successfully
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise
- Ability to travel extensively
- Ability to complete complex engagements on time with desired results
- Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment and problem-solving techniques in the decision-making process
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with medical and administrative staff and residents
