The University of Rocehster Medical Center, Department of Medicine is seeking a Medical Director of the Transplant Institute.

Nature and Scope: The Medical Director of the Transplant Institute will function at the Division Chief level and is responsible for partnering with other department leaders to create and maintain a world-class transplant program. They will serve as the key liaison to the Department of Medicine and will work closely with the Chiefs of Nephrology & GI and other Divisions of Medicine to ensure academic connections for Transplant Institute physicians. The Medical Director will help set the strategic and clinical direction of the program and will provide oversight of the clinical and research activity of the medical specialists who are part of the transplant institute. The Medical Director must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and an understanding of the inter-dependent roles of the various medical specialties and allied health professionals. The Medical Director is responsible for promoting high standards of practice and a positive team culture.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with leadership to establish the overall strategy, clinical direction and research focus for the Institute to promote clinical and academic growth.
  • As a key member of the Transplant Institute Leadership Team, participate as an active member of the Joint Operating Committee (JOC). As Medical Services program leader the Medical Director will bring critical concerns to the JO and/or or the Chair of the Department of Medicine.
  • Work with the Transplant program Medical and Surgical directors to establish liver and kidney transplant program goals and objectives consistent with those of the hospital and the Transplant Institute
  • Ensures that the transplant programs achieve survival outcomes that are statistically acceptable, as per CMS and OPTN regulations.
  • Promote a cooperative and collaborative working environment among the clinical disciplines involved in transplant care.
  • The position will be split between clinical activity (70%) and leadership activities (30%)
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Transplant Institute including hiring and supervising faculty and staff members, attending and facilitating meetings and conferences, continually assessing clinical activity and balancing resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to assure continued compliance with applicable laws including the guidelines established by UNOS, CMS, the NY State Department of Health and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals.
  • Assist the Transplant Institute Executive Director in developing and meeting the Transplant Institute s budgetary goals.
  • Provide strategic direction for referring physician communication and relationship management. Participate in transplant program outreach activities.
  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationship with colleagues, referring MDs, hospital personnel, and patients/families in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
  • Attend meetings and conferences to remain current regarding issues relevant to the performance of duties.

Qualifications
  • M.D. Degree or equivalent
  • Must obtain a New York State Medical License prior to start date
  • Eligible for a Faculty Appointment at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Must meet all credentialing requirements
  • Eligible for Board Certification in Nephrology or Gastroenterology or Infectious Disease
  • Post offer Drug Screen and Health Assessment required
  • Compliance with University and New York State health requirements
  • Be a faculty in good standing on the hospital staff
  • Five years clinical experience in medical transplantation specialty area (nephrology, hepatology or infectious diseases)
  • Solid academic background with experience in research or a history of service in transplant related societies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to accept and implement change
  • Ability to problem solve to make effective decisions
  • Demonstrated history of positive collegial relations with colleagues, support staff, administrators and patients

The referenced pay range represents the University s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process.
