Boston Medical Center (BMC) and the Boston University Avedisian & Chobanian School of Medicine seek a dynamic leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief.

The position comprises two critical leadership appointments: Chair, Department of Medicine, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief, Boston Medical Center (BMC). The chair is also a ex officio member of the school’s Executive Committee. The Physician-in-Chief is also an ex officio member of the BMC Board of trustees as well as an ex officio member of the Boston University Medical Group’s Board of trustees.

The next Chair will be an accomplished visionary leader in internal medicine, an exemplary physician, investigator, and teacher, with a track record of success in program development, mentoring, and innovation. The Chair is expected to balance the commitment to the research, clinical and education missions within the Department. Accordingly, the Chair will recruit and retain faculty, provide mentoring, create new clinical and research programs, and collaborate with other academic units, schools within Boston University, and the Boston Medical Center Health System. As Physician-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center, this leader will develop and execute the overall vision for patient care services and help position BMC as the choice destination for care. This leader will oversee the quality, efficiency, and access to clinical programs and work to advance the benefits of value-based care and population health. Critically, this leader will champion Chobanian & Avedisian SOM and BMC’s work to improve health equity and reduce disparities.

Unwavering in its commitment to the community, BMC is a private, not-for-profit, 514-bed, academic medical center located in Boston's historic South End. With origins stretching back to 1864, Boston Medical Center’s mission is to provide exceptional care without exception – a commitment to care for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. BMC is undergoing a period of substantial growth, to have an even greater impact on the patients it serves. 70 additional inpatient beds will become available over the course of 2024 and 5 new operating rooms will be added in 2025.

Each year, approximately 140 new medical students and 350 graduate medical sciences students matriculate at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian SOM. The demanding and rigorous training curriculum that the medical students experience encompasses clinical work at more than 40 outpatient sites ranging from hospitals to private clinics, as well as laboratory research focused on the molecular, immunologic and biophysical foundations of disease to promote novel treatments and cures. The school recently received a $100M endowment to support medical and research excellence, and maintains a close relationship with BMC, which is co-located with the School of Medicine on the Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC). This relationship further facilitates collaborative research with investigators at the forefront of patient care. A critical success factor in continuing and broadening this impact is the recruitment of a new Chair of the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine is renowned for the impact of its teaching and research programs, and state-of-the-art clinical care for patients. The Department is comprised of 10 clinical sections and 4 research sections as well as the Evans Center for Implementation & Improvement Science (CIIS) and the Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research. With 500 faculty, the Department is a premier academic department with a rich history of providing superb patient care, education and research and a tradition of robust external and internal support including the dedicated Evans Medical Foundation Endowment. The Department has a diverse research portfolio currently supported by more than $100M in annual external funding.
