Salary DOE + Relocation, Sign On Bonus, Incentives & Loan Repayment Options

The position functions within the Behavioral Health Division to provide clinical psychiatric care for SEARHC patients, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. Treatment is primarily outpatient but may include consultation-liaison and emergency services in some locations. The Psychiatrist collaborates with other SEARHC providers and works as a member of an interdisciplinary behavioral health team.

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the J ob

  • Provides highest quality evidence based psychiatric clinical care to SEARHC patients to include psychiatric evaluations, psychotherapy, psychopharmacological therapy, psychiatric emergency triage, inpatient consultation ( when indicated ) and liaison, and other appropriate treatments in the outpatient setting.
  • Performs differential diagnosis, level of care, and treatment interventions based upon evaluation and synthesis of the clinical information available and coordinates treatment with medical providers and other systems of care.
  • Treats complex and seriously ill patients while providing education, consultation and support for patients, their families, and other behavioral health and medical providers.
  • Provides consultation and guidance to non-physician psychiatric medical staff providers and , when necessary , provides supervision and practice plan oversight .
  • Provides psychiatric consultation and clinical advice for SEARHC medical staff colleagues.
  • Documents all patient services in the medical record per SEARHC medical staff rules and regulations.
  • Approaches patients in a responsible, respectful, and caring manner to promote the most effective therapeutic relationship .
  • Collaborates in a positive manner with other health care professionals .
  • Embraces and demonstrates cultural competence in communication with patients, families, and community members.
  • When indicated , supports the advancement of psychiatric residents with clinical supervision, coaching, mentoring, and teaching .
  • Diligently maintains professional and business confidentiality per SEARHC standards and federal guidelines.
  • Participates and supports expected activities and committees of the Medical Staff Office.


Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required

  • MD or DO degree .
  • Satisfactory Completion of AMA approved psychiatric residency program .
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Alaska .
  • Active DEA Registration .
  • Buprenorphine registration is strongly preferred .
  • Ongoing board certification in psychiatric specialty .
  • Ongoing current certification for clinical practice (e.g. , BLS, PALS, ACLS as required by practice location) .


Experience Required

Knowledge of

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practice clinical psychiatric techniques as they apply to patient assessment, diagnosis, and/or treatment of mentally, emotionally, and developmentally disordered patients including substance abuse.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of current theories, literature, recent developments, and best practices in the field of mental health to maintain standards of care in keeping with practice.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of psychopharmacology and use of psychiatric medications .
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical staff bylaws, clinical services policies/procedures, ethical standards.


Skills i n

  • Proficient in oral and written communication skills, such as documentation in progress notes, narrative summaries, and reports; and effective communication with diverse patient populations .
  • Clinical analytical judgment skills to assess complex situations, including emergencies with high-risk patients, integrate various sources of information, and make appropriate diagnoses , clinical decisions, and plans of care.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with patients and other health care professionals.


Ability to

  • Ability to be empathic, understanding, and respectful towards staff and patients to create a positive working environment.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional integrity to apply ethical principles and guidelines to interactions with patients and staff, and manifest solid moral character during the course work and treatment .
  • Ability to be accessible to staff, share ideas, and demonstrate professional bearing under pressure and during conflicts.


Required Certifications:

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association, Physician License - State of Alaska - Alaska State Medical Board
