Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Department of Medical Education (DME) at the proposed Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine is recruiting an administrative faculty member to serve as Chair of DME. The successful candidate will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Department, oversee and manage departmental operations and administration, recruit and oversee the evaluation, mentoring and development of departmental faculty, and represent the Department's interests at the College and University levels. The Department Chair will lead an interdisciplinary team of educator scholars in developing and delivering an innovative osteopathic medical curriculum. Applicants are expected to merit the rank of associate or full professor.

The Chair will establish the Department's goals and objectives, manage faculty and staff, oversee the Department's contributions to the curriculum, facilitate student advising and mentoring, develop internal and external partnerships, manage budgets and resources, and ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

The position is based on the Chicago, IL campus, with relocation assistance available for eligible candidates.

The University is building the Illinois College of Osteopathic Medicine, or the IllinoisCOM (applicant status – seeking accreditation), anticipated to open for its first class of students in summer 2026 with a Mission to train exceptional physicians to leverage the interconnection of physical and mental health to provide compassionate, patient-centered care of the highest quality.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
Leadership and Strategy
• Foster the College's vision, mission, values, goals, and agenda within the department and align the department's focus and activities with the College's strategic priorities
• Lead strategic planning activities to determine educational, research, service, and operational priorities
• Promote innovation in all aspects of the Department's activities
• Represent the Department in college-wide leadership committees and administrative meetings
• Foster an environment that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging amongst faculty, staff, and students
• Recruit, hire, manage, and evaluate a diverse faculty to deliver excellent instruction, scholarship, and service
• Assign administrative, teaching, research, and clinical roles to the faculty of the department
• Ensure and facilitate effective mentoring and professional development opportunities for faculty
• Promote collaboration and manage conflict resolution effectively
• Develop and implement policies and procedures to promote employee productivity, growth, and success
• Model behaviors that promote the values of Belonging, Radical Collaboration, Innovation and Comprehensive Care
• Serve as a highly collaborative liaison of the University
• Base actions and decisions on sound ethics and what will bring the greatest benefit to the department, the College, and the University

Teaching, Curriculum Development, and Student Success
• Partner with the Office of Academic Affairs to provide oversight of curriculum design, delivery, and evaluation to promote program quality, integrity, and continuous quality improvement
• Coordinate faculty teaching assignments
• Promote adoption of innovative, evidence-based instructional methods and technologies
• Actively participate in the development and delivery of the curriculum and the assessment of student learning
• Partner with stakeholders to facilitate student advising and ensure opportunities for student mentoring, scholarly activity and professional growth

Service
• Represent the Department in professional organizations and events
• Partner with stakeholders to facilitate student recruitment and community outreach efforts
• Develop partnerships with healthcare providers, educational institutions, and other external stakeholders
• Participate in college and University committees

Research and Scholarly Activity
• Develop and support a departmental vision toward scholarly activity that integrates and aligns with the mission and vision of the College and University
• Promote research and scholarly collaborations amongst faculty and students
• Support faculty in securing external funding and resources for research
• Ensure research activities comply with applicable regulations and ethical standards
• Participate in scholarly activities congruent with an administrative position

Administration and Operations
• Manage budgets, staffing, facilities, and other resources effectively
• Along with the Dean of the COM and University Finance team, devise a strategic plan for the department with a mission-aligned budget that is managed responsibly and updated annually.
• Oversee the financial affairs and ensure long-term fiscal stability of the department
• Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and relevant regulations
• Oversee the execution of policies and procedures
• Prepare and present reports related to department activities, progress, and outcomes
• Collaborate across other units to support college and University administration
• Manage faculty assignments to ensure there is no conflict of commitment, and review consulting agreements for potential conflicts of interest

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Terminal degree (PhD, PharmD, DO/MD) in requisite area of expertise
• Subject matter expertise relevant to department focus
• Experience in medical education with progressive leadership experience

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with strategic planning, faculty development, curriculum design, and people management
• Record of effective departmental or program leadership at the graduate or medical education level
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and teams
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Creative problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented mindset

This opportunity is budgeted at $$200,000-$275,00 base compensation. Additional compensation factors may impact total compensation.
