The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), Department of Preventive Medicine, is seeking an independent researcher focused on childhood development or maternal and child health. The person selected for this position would be expected to be a primary investigator in projects related to the CANDLE cohort. The CANDLE Study (Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood) is an active longitudinal birth cohort of 1500 mother-child dyads based in Shelby County, TN (www.candlestudy.com) and a member of the NIH-ECHO (Environmental influences of Child Health Outcomes) consortium. CANDLE mothers and children have been followed uninterrupted for the past 16 years. The cohort includes 65% African American representation and has extensive data collection from mothers and children over time and with linkage to a participant biorepository.

The position is a full-time, tenured or tenure-track, state-supported appointment at the associate or full-professor level as appropriate. Productive assistant professors prepared to develop an independent research program are also encouraged to apply. The research focus may include, but is not limited to, respiratory disease, obesity, neurodevelopment, nutrition, addiction, prenatal and postnatal outcomes, or other socio-behavioral outcomes of high impact. The biorepository also supports genetic and other biomarker/omics research approaches. While candidates are expected to develop an independent research program, candidates may also maintain existing research collaborations. Although this is primarily a research position, the successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the academic mission of Department of Preventive Medicine and the Division of Epidemiology through teaching, student and junior faculty mentorship, and departmental service. A joint or secondary appointment in a clinical department may be feasible as appropriate.

Qualifications include:

Doctorate in epidemiology, public health, medicine, nursing, health psychology, or similar clinical research domain. Track record of peer-reviewed publications, grant awards, and academic leadership. Experience proposing and implementing epidemiologic and clinical studies such as observational studies, diagnostic studies, or randomized trials. Experience working with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. Excellent oral and written communication skills. This position comes with a generous start-up package, relocation costs, and excellent medical and educational benefits through the State of Tennessee. Interested applicants should electronically submit a copy of their curriculum vitae, and a cover letter summarizing your research and other experience. Questions about this posting can be sent to Dr. Jay Fowke, Professor of Preventive Medicine, at fjay@uthsc.edu.
