Aotearoa, New Zealand offers a broad range of opportunities for Senior Medical Officers (SMOs), Medical Specialists, Consultants and Fellows in a range of environments from fast-paced metropolitan centres to community-focused healthcare in urban, rural, and remote settings.

You’ll also receive the standard entitlements given to workers in New Zealand, including 10 days of sick leave per year, and four weeks of annual leave per week, as well as: 

  • Maternity leave for one year with six weeks of full pay 
  • Long Service Leave 
  • Onerous Duties Leave 
  • Ongoing Professional Development and Education 
  • Research and Publications 

To work in New Zealand, you will require registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, as well as a current Annual Practicing Certificate. SMOs will need to complete a vocational training programme, after which the Medical Council of New Zealand may register them to practise within a defined scope of practice in a particular branch of medicine. 

If you are an overseas-trained doctor you will need to check your eligibility for registration with the MCNZ to practice medicine in New Zealand. The Medical Council of New Zealand has three scopes of registration: Vocational, General and Special Purpose.
