SUMMARY:

UIHS Physicians provide comprehensive medical care to clients of United Indian Health Services (UIHS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides clinical care as granted via the UIHS credentialing and privileging process.
  • Elicits and records information about client’s medical history, surgical history, social history, family history, and other pertinent information related to the care of clients.
  • Conducts appropriate physical exams based on the client’s chief complaints and reason for visit.
  • Orders or executes various tests, analyses, and diagnostics to provide information on client’s condition.
  • Analyzes reports and findings of tests and of examination, and diagnoses condition.
  • Administers or prescribes treatments and medication as needed.
  • Abstains from costly, unnecessary, or excessive testing and treatment.
  • Orders and oversees the vaccination of clients to immunize clients from communicable diseases using current guidelines.
  • Advises and refers clients concerning diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease.
  • Educates clients on the importance of preventive services, such as screening tests, counseling services, and preventive medicines, as well as modalities to detect illnesses before they cause symptoms or problems.
  • Reports births, deaths, and outbreak of contagious diseases to governmental authorities.
  • Refers clients to medical specialists or other practitioners for specialized treatment.
  • Makes house and emergency calls to attend to clients unable to visit office or clinic, if necessary.
  • Conducts physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage.
  • Consults and advises Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants at UIHS clinics.
  • Provider supervision to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners as assigned.
  • Adheres with accreditation and compliance standards/guidelines.
  • Attends department meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Maintains a professional, organized, and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Assists in development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
  • Provides after hours back-up phone coverage for client advice by providing at home call coverage for UIHS at least five (5) weeks per calendar year.
  • Participates in the peer review process by returning reviews in a timely manner and participates in peer review meetings as needed.
  • Physician may be assigned to selected specific duties or committees based on interest, experience, and expertise; including, but not limited to: Diabetes Advisor, Laboratory Director, Infection Prevention Committee Liaison, etc.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the UIHS Mission, Vision, and Guiding Principles.

Specialized/Advanced Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Duties – may provide via contract specifics

  • Provides medical, pediatric and/or obstetrical services as privileged through local hospitals. Participates in on-call responsibilities and hospital duties, as outlined by contractual agreement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities although the physician will direct the work of others as it relates to client care. If applicable, the Physician will supervise individual physician assistants or work as collaborating physician for individual nurse practitioners in accordance with UIHS policies and procedures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  All post-doctorial residency training must be done in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved residency training program.

Physician I:

  • Graduate education to include graduation from an accredited Allopathic or Osteopathic Medical School.
  • Post-Doctoral Graduate year 1 completion from a primary care Residency Training Program.

Physician II:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in an American Board of Medical Specialties (AMBS) approved Board.

Physician III:

  • Meet above criteria with greater than five (5) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or,
  • Have Board Certification in a Primary Care related Fellowship from an AMBS approved Board.

Physician IV:

  • Meet the above criteria with greater than ten (10) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or,
  • Have greater than five (5) years clinical experience after Fellowship Board Certification in an AMBS approved Board.

 

COMPUTER OPERATIONS

  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentations.
  • Must be able to work in an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. Experience using NextGen preferred.

LANUGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in most difficult phases.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Physician's license from a U.S. state. Board Certification in a primary care specialty preferred.
  • Shall possess American Heart Association BLS certification and maintain such.
  • Shall possess a valid and maintain a current ACLS certificate.
  • Must possess a valid and maintain a current DEA certificate.
  • Must meet all other requirements for clinical staff membership as outlined in the UIHS Clinical Staff Bylaws Shall possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to be covered by agency's vehicle insurance and provide proof of valid private vehicle coverage.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).
  • Must be able to work with American Indian people and be sensitive to their culture.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve the Mission, Vision and Guiding principles of UIHS.
  • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.

Our History

The history of the United Indian Health Services began in 1968. It was a time when Native activism coincided with the nation-wide Civil Rights Movement and the Office of Economic Opportunity programs. Together these factors helped create a new era of self-determination for Indian peoples.

In California, where health services were so lacking, Indian groups formed their own health organizations. Each maintained its separate programs but together they started the California Rural Indian Health Board Inc. (CRIHB), an organization which continues providing its members with a variety of quality improvement and advocacy services. Sheer determination, hard work and financial sacrifice paid off when UIHS became an official non-profit organization, ready to serve people in 1970.

UIHS started with community outreach services. The first services provided on site were dental services. UIHS continued to expand it’s services into nearly every large town within Humboldt County, as well as servicing tribal members from every Rancheria and Reservation in the areas of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. The use of UIHS mobile services allowed the clinic to provide services to tribal members who still lived in areas that had no electricity or telephones.

Over the next twenty years UIHS outgrew four sites, started several satellite clinics, and went from offering basic visiting community health representative’s, dental and medical services to a thoroughly modern, full spectrum health service agency. Along the way UIHS has increasingly realized it’s goal of incorporating traditional values and customs into daily activities.
