Meritus Health in Hagerstown, MD, is seeking a Program Director for its ACGME-accredited Meritus Family Medicine Residency (MFMR). A foundational goal of the program is to train exceptional family physicians to meet the needs of patients, families and communities. Fundamentally, the program seeks to inspire residents along their individual journey and to promote their unique passions and aspirations as family physician leaders. This is accomplished through purposeful dialogue about building spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual capacity in the chaotic world of medicine.  We are searching for a Program Director who values these approaches in teaching, learning, modeling and leading.  Individual’s with experience serving at the Program Director or Associate Program Director level are preferred.

The MFMR began in 2019 and graduated its first class in 2022.  Currently the program is accredited for 18 (6-6-6) resident trainees with plans to expand within the next four years. We are seeking a talented and engaged Program Director to lead the program through this growth, which will include expansion to dual training sites as well as supporting a sports medicine clinic. The program has received excellent reviews from each ACGME site visit and inspection, and currently holds no citations.  Further, the program maintains outstanding support from senior health system leadership. 

Administrative duties will account for 0.9 FTE and clinical duties account for 0.1 FTE.  

Meritus Health is committed to growing and supporting medical education at all levels. In addition to expanding the MFMR, Meritus is also firmly committed to developing a proposed new school of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as a psychiatry and general surgery residency. The MFMR Program Director will have resources to advance the program in line with the educational mission of the system, with support from all levels of the organization and community.  

Program Director Essential Functions/Job Duties:

  • Oversee the administration of the program, including completion and submission of the application for expansion to the Family Medicine Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • Responsible for administering and maintaining an educational environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competency areas.
  • Responsible for compliance with the sponsoring institution’s written policies and procedures and those of the ACGME and the Family Medicine Review Committee, including the selection, evaluation, and promotion of residents, disciplinary action, and supervision of residents.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with ACGME and Review Committee policies and procedures as outlined in the ACGME Manual of Policies and Procedures, and Meritus Health System staff policies and procedures will be expected.
  • The Director will be employed by Meritus Health and reports to the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education-DIO.


Program Director Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree with current board certification and participation in maintenance of certification by the American Board Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.
  • Experience as a Program Director, Associate Program Director, or core faculty for 5 years preferred, or specialty expertise and documented educational and administrative experience in graduate medical education acceptable to the ACGME Family Medicine Review Committee.
  • Demonstrated excellence in skill sets including, but not limited to, clinical care, clinical teaching, and scholarly activity that advance clinical medicine and institutional service.
  • The ability to define and articulate a vision for the program that complements the mission and vision of Meritus Health.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, evaluation methodology, teaching, and mentoring residents.
  • An understanding of the need to market to all constituencies by providing service excellence and quality.
  • Strong and collaborative leadership style with the interest and ability to lead by example.
  • A passion for teaching and infusing the next generation of physicians with a thirst for excellence in clinical care, leadership, and scholarship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An effective consensus builder, team leader, and team player.

  • Participation in scholarly activities that have led to publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or other presentations.
  • Possession of or eligibility for licensure in the State of Maryland, CDS, and DEA.
