The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (Brown), together with its health system partner, Lifespan, seek a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief. This pivotal role presents an unparalleled chance to shape the future of surgical excellence, innovation, and education while leaving an indelible mark on patient care and medical advancements for Brown and all of its affiliates.

This is an exceptional opportunity to inspire, develop, and lead an accomplished team of faculty, staff, and trainees in a department with a longstanding reputation for excellence at one of the most respected medical schools in the U.S. The next chair will have the experience required to serve as a transformative and visionary leader and will lead best-in-class clinicians, researchers and educators and will effectively collaborate with local leadership at all of the affiliates and outstanding clinicians who positively impact the health of patients, families, and communities throughout the state of Rhode Island, the region, and the nation.

The successful candidate will have an established reputation for surgical and clinical excellence and innovation, along with a proven record of having demonstrated critical leadership, organizational, and management skills needed to lead in the context of a changing healthcare environment. The department is seeking a surgically active leader with a strong vision for growth, who prioritizes clinical quality and scholarship, and who appreciates the importance of collegial decision making in an interdisciplinary environment. They must have a demonstrated passion for embracing change and organizing others to achieve ambitious goals. Above all, the Chair will be the architect of the department in promoting and supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

The Warren Alpert Medical School (Medical School), a component of Brown's Division of Biology and Medicine, is a national leader in medical education and biomedical research. The Warren Alpert Medical School attracts a highly diverse body of students from throughout the U.S. and abroad. Together with Brown's seven affiliated teaching hospitals, the collective research enterprise in the life and health sciences attracts approximately $200 million in sponsored research funding per year.

Lifespan, Rhode Island's first health system, was founded in 1994 by Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. It is a not-for-profit comprehensive, integrated, academic health system closely aligned with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
