We are looking to add a skilled Pulmonologist/Critical Care Physician to our Richmond VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. We are seeking a highly motivated Board Eligible/Board Certified Pulmonology Medicine physician, with a full and unrestricted medical license from any state or territory, who shares our commitment to providing excellent care to our US Veterans.

The Richmond VA Medical Center, located in Richmond, Virginia, is a level 1a 349-bed facility offering primary, secondary, and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, intensive care, intermediate care, precision oncology, acute and sustaining spinal cord injury, polytrauma care, skilled nursing home care, and palliative care. The medical center has four community-based outpatient clinics located in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Emporia and Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and a strong and mutually beneficial affiliation with the Medical College of Virginia. Residency programs exist in virtually all general and specialty areas of medicine, rehabilitation, surgery, psychiatry, and dentistry. The medical center has an active cardiac and liver transplantation program.


Major Duties / Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Pulmonology/Critical Care Physician include, but are not limited to the following:

Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care in outpatient and inpatient Pulmonary Medicine as well as Critical Care Medicine.

Teaching is an integral part of the work of a VA staff Pulmonologist. Teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows is required.

Pulmonary-Critical Care physicians are expected to perform a variety of procedures including arterial puncture, EKG interpretation, arthrocentesis, abdominal paracentesis, venipuncture, nasogastric tube insertion, PFT interpretation, moderate sedation, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, intra-arterial line & central venous line placement, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, bronchoscopy with routine procedures, bronchial stent placement, bronchoscopy with trans bronchial biopsy/aspiration, chest tube insertion and fluoroscopy equipment usage.

Shares after hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation

Collaborates with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation.

Excellent compensation – Competitive salary ranges from $230,000 - $348,000 per year based on qualifications, with biennial market pay reviews

Excellent daily work schedule – Monday thru Friday – 8:00 am – 4:30 pm with rotating call for weekday and weekends. Limited on-call coverage

Generous time away from practice – 50-55 days of paid time off per year, 26 days of annual leave, 13 annual sick days and 11 paid federal holidays

Up to 5 days off may be approved to attend approved CME for Full-Time Board-Certified physicians

Excellent retirement benefits with traditional federal pension and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. 

Qualify for defined federal pension after 5 years of federal service

Insurance – Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care available (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
