Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and SSM Health’s SLUCare Academic Division seek an accomplished physician leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Radiology. Through nearly a century of exemplary experience, the at Saint Louis University has demonstrated a commitment to providing exceptional care to patients. The mission of the Department of Radiology is to provide outstanding patient-centered imaging, exceptional education, and innovative research.

Department personnel take pride in being a team of dedicated and highly specialized physicians, researchers, and staff who provide best in class imaging and diagnosis and contribute to high-quality patient care and innovative research. The Department offers state-of-the-art radiology education, compassionate patient care, and a growing research enterprise. It has particular strengths in interventional radiology and nuclear medicine. With the 2022 integration of the School’s physician practice organization into SSM Health, the Department of Radiology is poised for growth across each of its mission areas of education, research, and patient care.

With a robust team of 30 dedicated full-time faculty, 10 part-time faculty, 6 advanced practice providers (APPs), and 32 residents, the Department of Radiology provides a full range of diagnostic and interventional radiology services at our primary teaching hospital, SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, and our academic community hospital, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. The department also provides interventional radiology and nuclear medicine services at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and the VA Saint Louis Health Care System – John Cochran Division.  The Department includes residencies in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, and nuclear medicine. The clinical trials revenue generated by the Department of Radiology has increased significantly over the past few years, more than doubling since 2020.

Through the clinical integration with SSM Health, SLU is further deepening its collaborative relationship with a robust community radiology service line. This relationship expands the clinical referral network for SLU and expands clinical trials and educational opportunities more broadly, including collaboration with industry, government, and community partners. By the same token, the integration with SSM Health creates exciting opportunities for Radiology to enhance SSM’s radiology and imaging services, to extend its academic expertise across the SSM system of hospitals and clinics, to do research at scale, and to become a regional testbed for innovation in radiology.

The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine with regard to the Department’s academic mission of education and research and to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs with regard to its patient-care mission.  Working with colleagues in the School of Medicine and at SSM Health, the Chair is responsible for all aspects of the Department’s success and for ensuring that it plays its central role in enabling SSM Health and SLU School of Medicine to fulfill their missions.

Qualifications

The Chair must be an MD/DO or equivalent, hold current Board certification in Radiology, and be eligible for an unrestricted Missouri state medical license. Additionally, the Chair will have credentials that merit appointment in the School of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full professor.

Candidates will possess an approachable, servant-leader style and will demonstrate excellence in teaching, clinical practice, program development, and experience in research administration. They will have a record of cooperative working relationships and effective use of interpersonal and communication skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy. The Chair will be capable of establishing a culture of physician engagement, accountability, and shared responsibility for patient safety and the quality of care and will bring a willingness to learn and collaborate in all aspects of the School’s strategic approach to education, research, patient care, diversity, and inclusion.
