Assistant Clinical Investigators
Transition Program in Clinical Research
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The NIAID Transition Program in Clinical Research provides an exceptional opportunity for physicians to gain clinical and translational research experience within the NIAID Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The program aims to increase the pool of well-trained clinical investigators who are competitive for clinical tenure-track positions.
Up to three candidates per year will be selected for three- to five-year appointments as assistant clinical investigators within DIR. Participants will receive independent resources and staff and will be mentored by an NIAID senior investigator.
Requirements
- A doctoral degree (M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.)
- Board eligible or board certified in a subspecialty (or equivalent)
- Qualify for credentialing by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center
To Apply
Applicants should identify a DIR lab chief who will agree to host their research. Information about DIR labs and contact information for lab chiefs is available on the DIR website. Interested candidates may contact DIR Director Dr. Steve Holland at sholland@niaid.nih.gov for additional information or assistance identifying an appropriate host lab.
To apply for the program, email the following to Amy Collins at amy.collins@nih.gov by November 30, 2023:
- Curriculum vitae
- Bibliography
- Research program proposal (no more than two pages)
- Letter of support from the accepting NIAID lab chief
Additionally, email three letters of recommendation addressed to the Chair, NIAID Transition Program in Clinical Research Search Committee, c/o Amy Collins, to amy.collins@nih.gov. The letters should come from someone other than your current supervisor/mentor, and one letter must be from a referee outside of NIH.
Applications will be evaluated by a search committee composed of DIR principal investigators with clinical and basic research interests. Competitive candidates will be invited to present their research accomplishments and plans to the search committee.
