Position Overview
RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a board-certified medical oncologist and Chief of Cancer Survivorship to join our team with equal time designated to two campuses: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, NJ. This new full-time position will be charged with establishing and leading a new Cancer Survivorship Program for patients in both regions. This new and unique role also offers opportunity for academic research and clinical trials.

The physician-led survivorship team will include two nurse practitioners as well as social workers to manage responsibility for cancer patients post-treatment surveillance and unique medical challenges. This program will distinguish cancer care by offering patients an even higher level of care post-treatment.

This position also provides an opportunity for strong clinical collaboration as well as opportunities to mentor residents and medical students.

The ideal candidate will be ABIM board-certified in addition to being fellowship-trained and board-certified in Oncology. Based in Livingston, NJ, and New Brunswick, NJ, this location is in close proximity to the famous Jersey Shore and also to NYC and offers excellent compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities
The Chief of Cancer Survivorship will help establish, grow and manage a new Cancer Survivorship program for RWJBarnabas Health. He or she will develop and lead a high-performing multi-disciplinary and inter-professional team of experts focused on treating and researching cancer survivorship. Focusing on the investigation of novel cancer survivorship questions related to screening, identification, prevention, and treatment. Particular interest in candidates who are able to oversee clinical research in survivorship and evaluate survivorship issues across the lifespan.
  • Develop a world-class cancer survivorship research program that is seen as a local, national, and international leader in the field.
  • Work with the RWJBarnabas Health clinical care teams in a strategic partnership to define and design long-term academic directions and build a network of researchers and educators with interests in cancer survivorship.
  • Act as a national resource for evidence-based evaluation, cancer survivorship, and cost-effective medical care.
  • Mentor junior faculty, pre-and post-doctoral fellows, staff, and medical students.
  • This will be an outpatient, clinical position seeing cancer survivors and providing treatment for health issues stemming from cancer treatment, social/psychological issues, monitoring possible reoccurrence of malignancy, and long-term health issues related to the disease itself.
  • Patients will be seen 2 days per week in Livingston and 2 days per week in New Brunswick. 1 day of administrative work per week, in either location.
  • Nurse practitioner and nurse support at both locations.
  • A comprehensive survivorship research program is in place at Rutgers Cancer Institute, with a PhD currently leading that effort with $5 million in annual extramural grants/funding.
  • Immediate patient volume is expected due to the large existing referral base of hematologists/oncologists at the 12 affiliated acute care hospitals and associated oncology practices.
  • The physician will handle mostly initial visits, with NPs conducting most follow-ups.
  • No call required, this is purely a consultative role.

Qualifications
  • M.D. with active certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in medical oncology.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in New Jersey.
