Chair of Medicine

Kern Medical, in California's Central Valley, is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader for the position of Chair of Medicine. This position affords a collaborative, strategic and results-oriented leader the opportunity to set the future direction for the Department of Medicine. The Chair will provide overall strategic and operational leadership for the Department and will have responsibility for strategic planning, business development, clinical services, medicine faculty oversight, graduate and undergraduate medical education, professional performance, and clinical research. This is an outstanding leadership opportunity for a physician who likes to lead from the front, working with providers, nursing and administration to grow and develop new programs and clinical capabilities. The Chair of Medicine will be vital in continuing to grow Kern Medical's reputation as one of the most respected teaching hospitals in the region.

Located in Bakersfield, Kern Medical is a full-service, acute care teaching hospital. Kern Medical is one of California's designated public safety net hospitals that services the community's most vulnerable populations including a trauma center, inpatient behavioral health unit with access to acute medical services, and a teaching hospital that trained many of the area's physicians. Kern Medical currently has 10 clinic locations and 120 employed providers in its medical group.

With oversight of 17 clinical divisions and sections, the Chair will set Departmental performance expectations, establish a vision and execute the strategy to build service volume, create seamless referral relationships, and advance the technical sophistication and efficiency of the Department. This is an outstanding opportunity for an enterprising leader to elevate a Department focused on collaboration, engagement and a commitment to innovation, excellence in clinical care and educating the next generation of physicians.

Kern Medical seeks candidates with prior administrative and leadership experience gained within a Department of Medicine and strong interpersonal and communication skills that complement a passion for excellence. Candidates must hold the degree of M.D. or D.O., be Board-certified in Internal Medicine or a Medicine specialty and possess qualifications for an academic appointment to the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

The compensation will be in the $400,000 - $500,000 range including a combination of base salary and bonus based on credentials, clinical specialty and years of experience.
