Behavioral Health at Backus and Windham Hospital:

The Department of Psychiatry, an integral part of the HHC Behavior Health Network [HHC BHN] at WWBH provides all levels of care for adults ages 18 and above. WWBH [213 beds] has an 18 bed inpatient adult unit, outpatient services at PHP, IOP and Office care levels for individuals requiring behavioral health services or substance use prevention services. Within the system it has been mentioned, that, 'the Department is small enough for everyone in the hospital to know you, but big enough to influence the care of patients in almost all other departments'.

The Psychiatrist will divide the time between all levels of the out-patient service [PHP, IOP Office at primarily at WWBH and secondarily at WH]. Here, the psychiatrist is expected to provide services, including diagnostic admission evaluations, ongoing psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, as appropriate. The psychiatrist will work within a multi-disciplinary treatment team and act as a clinical team leader for the coordination and supervision of care provided across clinical disciplines, including providing guidance and leadership to other clinicians on the team in formulating and implementing the treatment plan. The ideal candidate is expected to act as liaison and communicate effectively with outside providers, primary care physicians, and family members, as needed.

There is an opportunity for the psychiatrist to provide supervision to selected medical students, residents and non-physician health professionals. The psychiatrist can participate in Medical Staff Committees and is expected to attend meetings as specified in Medical Staff regulations. The Department is focused on the development and maturation of early career psychiatrists. Being an integral part of the HHC BHN, there are several opportunities to become integral to robust, imaginative and visionary system Annual Improvement Projects [AIP]. Current ongoing AIP include initiatives on Early Psychosis Treatments, Zero Opioid Death Initiative, and a Behavior Dyscontrol Project. There are several other HHC BHN initiatives ongoing, such as the HHC-wide Zero Suicide Project as well as the Colleague Wellness Initiative. Every feasible opportunity will be offered and encouraged for projects that the psychiatrist might want to pursue. Avenues for training and development of leadership skills are also available within HHC.

After hours call and coverage for weekends and holidays is optional and not required as part of credentialing. This is compensated, additionally, at a rate separate from that of the salary.
