Pathologist-in-Chief & Director

The Chair will ensure the excellence of the Pathology Department’s clinical, educational, and research programs and assume overall responsibility for operations and strategy across the Department. Reporting to the HSS Surgeon-in-Chief and President and CEO of HSS, the Chair will strengthen the Department based on the needs of the overall institution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise all physicians and other staff in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, provide ongoing mentorship to junior pathologists
  • Foster the integration of the Department of Pathology into the research mission at HSS, which includes but is not limited to: development of collaborations with HSS scientists and clinicians, scientific presentations, manuscripts in peer-reviewed literature and interdisciplinary grant proposals involving clinical, translational, and basic science research. 
  • Work with clinicians to develop and implement clinical trials using cell therapy and other biologic therapies, ideally to result in the eventual  development of protocols for cell-therapy programs at HSS, including SOPs for cell banking, point-of-care testing of cell viability, identity, biologic activity, and endotoxin testing. 
  • Work with the Vice President of Laboratory Services to obtain and maintain clinical laboratories’ licenses, permits and accreditations, in accordance with all requirements of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations and all requirements of The Joint Commission
  • Work on planning efforts for delivery of laboratory/pathology services to Hospital and Hospital-affiliated sites
  • Participate in all appropriate Hospital and Medical Staff Committees
  • Recruit physicians to provide clinical, educational, and research services to the Department, and make all physician employment decisions
  • Assure appropriate coverage at all times by a pathologist as required by the patient care needs of the Hospital
  • Achieve the departmental budget objectives, including revenue projections, and capital, operating, and expenditure budget planning, in coordination with the Vice President, Laboratory Administration
