The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in the Duke University School of Medicine is a diverse, robust, interdisciplinary academic department with programs focused on education and training, patient care and community health, consultations and collaborations, and research and scholarship. The Department is composed of five interdependent divisions — Community Health, Family Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, PA Studies, and Student Health — with a shared mission to partner with communities to improve health outcomes.
The Duke Department of Family Medicine and Community Health seeks a Vice Chair for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) to continue to build, advance, and elevate the strategic vision of the Department toward our goal of inclusive excellence. The Vice Chair will address EDI topics embedded within learning and curriculum, research, Departmental culture, and recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students. Additionally, the Vice Chair will incorporate the School of Medicine’s focus on anti-racism into an EDI strategic plan for the Department. The Vice Chair will serve as a key advisor and partner to the Chair, other Vice Chairs, and the Department leadership team.
The Vice Chair will work in concert with the Staff Director of EDI (to be appointed via a search led by the Vice Chair), and both with be supported by an administrative coordinator. The time commitment to this Vice Chair role is negotiable and is expected to be a minimum of 25% of full-time effort, with 75% of effort being some combination of clinical, teaching, other funded service, research, or other contract(s). Applicants must be eligible for regular-rank faculty appointment (MD or equivalent, Ph.D., MD/Ph.D., or master’s degree).
The preferred candidate will have the ability to cover up to 75% in a clinical setting within Family Medicine Clinic or Employee Health and Wellness Clinics; or the candidate will have the ability to cover up to 75% with acquired research funding in the fields of public health, health disparities, family medicine, health services, or health equity.
- Experience in leadership, management, or health professional education in EDI
- Prior supervisory responsibility for a Department or interdisciplinary team
- Strong history of bridge-building, mentorship, sponsorship, building trust and credibility, and understanding the unique needs of marginalized groups
- Proven ability to navigate institutional and local climate, particularly circumstances involving sensitive situations
- Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills with detail-orientedness and strategic aptitude
- Experience in a clinical setting, or with clinical, community health, or EDI research
- Knowledge of public health, health disparities, or health equity
- Expertise and record of scholarship in the EDI space
- Ability to cover ~75% of effort not devoted to Vice Chair role
- Administrative experience in a professional setting to include overseeing programs, strategic planning, and collaborative project management
- Experience writing and submitting grants
- Serve as a liaison to School of Medicine leadership, the Vice Dean for EDI, the Duke Office of EDI, and Duke Primary Care
- Develop Department’s goals for EDI that embrace the strategic goals of the Duke School of Medicine, and develop Department-specific metrics to evaluate achievement of these goals
- Collaborate with other Department leaders and trainees working in the EDI sphere
Education and Employment
- Collaborate with Vice Chair for Education & Faculty Development to provide mentorship, developmental, and educational opportunities in structural competency and implicit bias for faculty, staff, and trainees
- Work with Departmental leadership to promote an inclusive learning and working environment for trainees, faculty, and staff, including ensuring that evaluation systems are unbiased and promote equity
- Analyze Departmental demographics related to race, ethnicity, gender, rank and tenure status for faculty, trainees, and staff and provide national comparative information to inform Department’s strategies, challenges, and opportunities
- Evaluate EDI-relevant Departmental goals and implementation of EDI strategies, ensuring accountability for follow through
- Assess the Department’s past successes and challenges in recruiting faculty and staff, and develop effective strategies for outreach and recruitment of candidates from underrepresented backgrounds
- Engage leadership regarding best practices for recruitment, ranking, and retention of faculty, staff, and trainees as well as assist in the creation of key search committees and search committee processes
- Collaborate with colleagues within and outside the Department on scholarly activities including presentations, manuscripts, or digital media
- Engage with local EDI scholars and programs, and greater Durham community leaders
- Scholarly pursuits in the area of health equity, health disparities, and/or EDI
