Physician (Radiology-Diagnostic) - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD)
Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Dego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

1. Serves as subject matter expert in neuroradiology; performs cutting edge, highly complex, clinically challenging cases while also providing ongoing outpatient clinical care for patients prior to and following their procedures. These duties require extensive experience and training and often require the practitioner to make immediate decisions and employ multi-disciplinary evidence-based practices. Patients are often critically ill and time-sensitive which requires versatile clinical skills. Performs/interprets full range of radiographic procedures/studies as authorized by delineated clinical privileges. Prescribes/dispenses medication as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Collaborates with staff at NMRTC SD and at other institutions in the local community to further the development of new practices and methodologies in the field of neuroradiology. As a board-certified Radiologist, provides the full scope of advanced diagnostic radiology services, including the most difficult and complex in nature, for the Department of Radiology, NMRTC SD. Duties include the full range of Diagnostic Radiology, including but not limited to Plain Film Radiography, Computed Radiography (CR), Fluoroscopy, Neuro-radiology, Ultrasonography (US), Arthrography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Computerized Tomography (CT), and Computerized Tomographic Angiography (CTA) in accordance with established principles, practices and ethics of both the medical profession and the American College of Radiology. Incumbent provides expertise and consultation in the subspecialty field of Radiology. Exercises independent judgment in the treatment and management of patients with the full range of conditions encountered in radiology and provides assistance to house staff and medical trainees. Provides training to educate radiology technologists and students. Reviews and approves requests for exams. As NMRTC SD is a central hub for Navy neuroradiology within the western United States the incumbent will have extensive collaboration partnership with civilian health systems for interactive and consulting on patients on a wide area to include national level for care and treatment of patients.
Participates in resident education, teaching residents and rotating medical students during neuroradiology cases, as well as providing neuroradiology didactic lectures in support of the radiology residency. Has oversight of major Command level radiology programs that are deemed to be critical to the GME training programs. Supports GME/Residency by assisting the radiology program director with promotion, board certification preparation, prospective residency candidate interviews, and evaluation of residents, interns and medical students. Will oversee/supervise the training of residents and fellows from NMRTC SD and from outside facilities that have training partnerships with the hospital. Attends/monitors resident lectures and provides resident orientation lectures. Assume duties of research director, academic chief, curriculum director or other key academic posts. Required to give lectures and conduct examinations for radiology residents as delineated by residency program director. Prepares papers for publication in national peer-reviewed journals to further research and new process development.
May be assigned as division officer/assistant division officer or other duties as delineated by Chairman of Radiology. Oversees daily operation of assigned clinical areas. Approves requests for exams and handles requests for emergencies. Participates in continuing medical education to meet professional growth requirements. Participates in hospital performance improvement activities/risk management. Attends required hospital provided annual training. Promotes preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling. Adheres to HIPAA compliance as well as other policies relating to patient and significant others' rights as identified within the institution.
Manages risk by demonstrating awareness of legal issues in all aspect of patient care and unit function and strives to manage risk appropriately with a balanced regard for patient care and medical education. Coordinates/manages the functions/duties of the health care team, patient care and clinic activities. Deals with principles of Managed Care (TRICARE). Familiar with age specific competencies as related to healthcare. Uses electronic medical records/PACS.
1. Provision of Direct Patient Care/Technical Requirements:
- Incumbent has responsibility within the department when patients are present for examination, including overall supervision of critically ill patients and provision for emergency treatment and resuscitative measures when necessary.
- Obtains history for general radiographic diagnoses, reviews indicated laboratory tests results, and assesses severity of illness. Provides formal counseling with patients (inpatient and outpatient) when necessary, thoroughly documenting all aspects of the encounter in the medical treatment record. Provides follow-up when indicated. Contacts patients and referring clinicians to provide results of examinations and consultations when appropriate. Oversees the radiographic examination, ensuring the correct radiographic procedures are conducted, relating the symptom(s) to the pain and illness of the patient.
- Utilizes specialty unique imaging technology in the diagnostic evaluation and when appropriate treatment of patients with complex problems (multi-organ system dysfunction or failure) using special procedures such as CT, MRI, NM and Ultrasound.
- Provides consultation, reporting the radiologic diagnostic examination, delivering interpretation of the study and the diagnosis of the radiographic examination to the clinician. Reevaluates incoming studies of patients being transferred from other medical treatment facilities to determine accuracy of diagnosis.
- Recommends and directs the care and treatment of the patient. Consults with the requesting physician before a procedure is done, deciding on the procedure and ensuring the minimization of the invasion of the patient. Consults with the surgeon in planning the surgical plan of approach.
- Provides overall supervision of critically ill patients under diagnostic care and provides for emergency treatment and resuscitative measures when necessary. Obtains consultation, provides referral within the department and other medical elements within NMCSD and the outlying primary care medical clinics, and when required by the patient's condition with other staff radiologists, clinicians, residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses. Maintains daily interaction with other staff radiologists, clinicians, residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses.
- Accomplishes special quality assurance studies in accordance with schedule established by the Chief, Department of Radiology. Provides advice, professional opinions, and written technical studies and professional reviews upon request by the Chief, Department of Radiology in support of the various boards and committees within NMCSD involved with evaluation of patient care and treatment. May be required to attend Department or Hospital board or committee meetings in accordance with schedule established by the Chief, Department of Radiology. Submits Diagnostic Radiology Reports. These reports of diagnostic interpretations are submitted as dictation (on government furnished equipment), handwritten, stamped, or typed as directed in Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by the Chief, Department of Radiology.
- Performs consultations with the requesting physicians and other staff radiologists as required. Provides technical direction for technicians and ancillary personnel in the Department of Radiology in the performance of their duties. Investigates new procedures and diagnostic techniques in radiology to improve or modify diagnostic capabilities.
2. Quality Assurance, Utilization Review, Risk Management, Peer Review:
Participates in the clinics quality assurance, utilization review, risk management, and peer review activities. Attends medical staff meetings as required. Serves as a member of the Medical Staff
Executive Committee, Credentials Committee and other hospital committees as assigned. Also, the incumbent ensures that the highest standards of professional practice and ethics are maintained; that established operating policies are adhered to; that staff personnel receive the necessary professional training; that medical records are properly safeguarded and maintained; and that all required reports are prepared and submitted in a timely manner.

US Citizenship required
Must have completed an ACGME accredited residency training program in Diagnostic Radiology
Must be board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) with Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in Neuroradiology
Must have completed a neuroradiology fellowship
Clinical experience practicing as a neuroradiologist and graduate medical education teaching experience with accredited radiology residency training program (minimum 3 years)
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).
Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
