The UCSF School of Medicine seeks a nationally recognized, innovative educational leader to guide the next era of outstanding medical education at one of the nation’s most highly ranked public medical schools. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Vice Dean for Education will lead a talented team of associate deans and directors who oversee Admissions, Student Experience, Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Standards, Medical Education Administration, Regional Campuses, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Program Evaluation, Faculty Development and Research, and the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. Each of these educational leaders work with the Associate Dean for Medical Administration to support and staff units for all aspects of the continuum of medical education.

In addition, the Vice Dean for Education has general oversight responsibility for outreach programs, individualized programs for learners (e.g., Joint Medical Program at UC Berkeley, the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved (PRIME-US), San Joaquin Valley PRIME (SJV Prime), Pathways to Discovery, flexible residencies, and CME), student scholarships, academic grievance and appeals, institutional affiliation agreements, alumni and development services for education, and interprofessional education.

Our focus is on educating the physician workforce that our patients, state, and nation need, ensuring that every UCSF graduate is prepared for careers providing compassionate, patient-centered care, grounded in scientific and scholarly inquiry, social justice, anti-racism, and interprofessional teamwork. The institution is fully accredited by the LCME and WASC.

Among other specific responsibilities, the Vice Dean for Education’s role is to:

• recruit and support aspiring physicians and medical school graduates who are committed to contributing to all careers in which physicians are needed;

• adapt, evolve, and innovate their curricula to ensure that all graduates are prepared to provide evidence-based, equitable, culturally responsive care to the diverse communities of the State of California and beyond, across the lifespan of their careers;

• critically analyze all educational content and systems for equity and revise to advance anti-oppression constructs;

• develop systems of financial, learning, emotional, and social support for all learners, including those from groups that have been historically excluded in medicine;

• utilize assessment, recognition, and reward systems that are equitable and support a growth mindset;

• engage in continuous educational improvement and accreditation readiness;

• support faculty to develop skills in effective, equitable, and anti-oppression teaching and program development; and

• Recruit, retain, and advance staff as educational professionals.

An MD or equivalent degree required.
