Los Angeles, California

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) seek an inspirational, collaborative, and mission-driven physician leader to serve as the next Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics (Chair).

This is a transformational opportunity to leverage CHLA's unique position as a perennial top-10 children's hospital as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. CHLA proudly serves as the safety net provider for children in Southern California and is the preeminent provider of specialized, complex care and primary care access for the ~2.3 million children residing in Los Angeles County. CHLA's network spans well beyond Los Angeles with a delivery system that includes the five surrounding counties, and CHLA's renowned service line programs attract patients nationally and internationally. CHLA's Saban Research Institute is home to more than 350 funded scientists and is one of the largest pediatric research institutes in the nation. CHLA's medical education and training programs include one of United States' most substantial general pediatric residency and fellowship programs.

CHLA's longstanding academic affiliation with USC's KSOM is based on a legacy of educational innovation, world-class research, and impactful community-based clinical care. Working with a collaborative leadership team at both organizations, the Chair will be a respected and visible leader in children's health across CHLA, KSOM, throughout the state, and beyond.

KSOM has built a legacy at the forefront of innovation in academic medicine and community service and is home to 2,079 full-time faculty and 269 part-time faculty, and approximately 1270 resident and fellow physicians across Keck Medical Center, LAC+USC Medical Center, and CHLA. Robust educational programs encompass 3,006 students, including MD, PhD, MD/PhD, master's, undergraduate, certificate, and part- time students. In addition to the MD program, whose innovative curriculum integrates clinical study with basic science and issues of health justice, KSOM offers 30 graduate programs - MD/PhD, PhD, master's, and certificates - in which students work on the world's most pressing health and biomedical problems. U.S. News and World Report ranks KSOM 28th in research, with ambitious plans to double the research footprint over the next 7 years. Areas of research eminence include stem cell and regenerative medicine, neuroscience, and cancer within a highly collaborative environment.

The Department of Pediatrics is comprised of nearly 500 faculty members, 111 residents, 103 fellows, and more than 400 team members across CHLA, KSOM, and Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center. With dual reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer of CHLA, Mr. Paul Viviano, and the new Dean of KSOM, Dr. Carolyn Meltzer, the Chair will be responsible for guiding the integration of research and clinical activities and fortifying the department's business position through responsible yet bold fiscal management. The Chair's successes will solidify the Department of Pediatrics as the preeminent destination for providing the highest quality medical education and pediatric training, research, and patient care to the children of Los Angeles and beyond.

Academically affiliated since 1932, CHLA and KSOM have provided outstanding care with a shared public mission and an unwavering commitment to serving their local communities. Physicians and researchers at CHLA hold faculty appointments at USC, the institutions jointly provide compassionate and lifesaving care for patients of all ages, from infants still in the womb to youth on the cusp of adulthood, from all 50 states and more than 50 countries. Many of CHLA's achievements in care are made possible through a cohesive relationship with USC. As Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at CHLA, this position will serve as the main liaison with the University on behalf of all KSOM faculty who are based at CHLA and work closely with the KSOM Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.

Based at CHLA, the Chair will play a vital role in the continued growth and development of the Department of Pediatrics, leveraging its strengths and building toward future successes. The Chair will help the Department strengthen its impact through cutting-edge clinical care and research, progressive medical education, and personalized patient care, all in the context of CHLA's mission of creating hope and building healthier futures for children.
