The University of Connecticut’s Health Disparities Institute (HDI) is a research and policy center within the School of Medicine (SOM). The HDI focuses on the Bioscience Connecticut's legislative mandate that UConn shall support a HDI that will enhance research and the delivery of care to the State’s historically excluded minoritized and oppressed populations who have suffered disparate health outcomes. The HDI is seeking an Executive Director to further its mission of promoting health justice (equity) and eliminating health disparities in Connecticut and beyond by turning ideas shown to work into policies and actions. This is a tenure track position at The University of Connecticut Health Center. 

The Executive Director, who will report directly to the Dean of the SOM, will interface with the University as a whole to provide academic, policy, strategic, and thought leadership to promote the institute’s mission, create a supportive environment for key existing initiatives and direct the growth and development of new initiatives. The Director will be expected to bring an established health justice/equity/disparities academic agenda and provide innovative leadership and rigor across institute initiatives. In addition, the Director will be expected to build and nurture academic, clinical, community and public policy relationships across the State. A values-based belief in the principle of health equity and expertise in socio-economic and cultural determinants of health and strategies is essential.

REQUIREMENTS 

To successfully achieve the institute’s goals and objectives, the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required: 

  • Academic credentials of PhD, MD/DO, DMD/DDS, JD or Dr.PH or other terminal degrees (in Social Work, Psychology, Nursing,)
  • Eligible for appointment at senior rank and on a tenure track.
  • An established and externally funded research agenda related to health disparities/health equity/health justice research.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development of an interdisciplinary Institute or program that spans boundaries, with executive administrative leadership experience.
  • Superb communication, interpersonal and effective public speaking skills.
  • Recognized leadership within communities affected by health disparities.
  • A Background in applied and/or community participatory action research and clinical translation research.
  • Hands-on experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and demonstrated talent for building and navigating stakeholder relationships.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE 

Special consideration will be given to candidates that have: 

  • Experience leading a center or institute devoted to health disparities or health justice equity research, and familiarity with leading a federally funded center in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Current funding in health disparities-relevant research.
  • Experience with program and training grant writing.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability to build out the institute’s operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIE

  • The Executive Director serves as the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the Institute and is appointed by and reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine (SOM).
  • Working with the Associate Director and their key Initiatives, the Director Is expected to provide dynamic leadership (Research Program Operations, Internal/External Relations, Strategic Budgeting and Financial Planning, and Human Resources) to advance the vision and mission of the Institute to maximize its impact.
  • The Executive Director is responsible for developing an externally funded research agenda that serves the Bioscience CT mandate for the people of CT.
  • The Executive Director must actively engage with key stakeholders within the SOM, University and the greater CT community.
  • The Executive Director is expected to continue active engagement in research, secure external funding for the Institute, teach and mentor trainees at UConn SOM and other schools, and effectively represent the Institute within the university and community at large.
