This is a public health regional physician (medical director) position within the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) and is based in the Pee Dee Public Health Region of South Carolina.

We are seeking an MD or DO to serve as the Regional Medical Director (RMD) for the Pee Dee Region of SC DHEC. Applicant must possess a current, unrestricted Licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina; current Board Certification by an approved American Medical Specialty Board in either preventive medicine, family practice, or internal medicine; and a master’s degree in public health and/or relevant training as a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer or other similar Epidemiologic training program; and three years of experience in a public health or outpatient clinical setting.

The RMD serves as the primary clinician overseeing and/or guiding all aspects of clinical and/or clinically related care provided by region staff. The RMD is a member of the Regional Leadership Team and helps to define the regional mission, vision, and strategy. Duties include: Operating as a clinical consultant to address day-to-day aspects related to the provision of public health services and has oversight into the supervisor of all clinical staff (i.e., medical practitioners, nurses, epidemiologists, pharmacists, laboratory/medical technicians, technologists, disease intervention specialists, etc.); works in cooperation with Regional and DHEC staff to monitor and investigate cases and outbreaks of vaccine reportable diseases and other reportable diseases; participates in the planning, implementation and monitoring of outbreak control measures in the Region in cooperation with DHEC staff and other medical practitioners; assists with the analysis and interpretation of disease surveillance data and in using Continuous Quality Improvement principles to evaluate surveillance and response processes with a focus on science-based strategies; provides information that helps guide others (e.g., state staff, regional staff, community practitioners, those whose role impacts the health of the community at large, etc.) in understand regional public health programs and the provision of public health services; maintains mutually beneficial relationships with community providers, hospitals, medical schools, residency programs, regulatory agencies, etc.; is the primary medical consultant in the Regional Command Center during public health emergencies; and, serves as the medical spokesperson for the Region and in collaboration with the DHEC Office of Media Relations provides timely and accurate information about public health issues to local media.

Serves as occasional back-up to DHEC central office physicians and the other RMD’s. The RMD is required to be available via communications device 24/7.

Candidate should have a thorough knowledge/understanding of the principles and practices of medicine related to public health services; a strong background in epidemiology; an understanding of the structure and functions of healthcare organizations and the current social and economic problems pertaining to public health at a national, state, and community level.

Location/Headquarters: Within the Pee Dee Public Health Region – This is Negotiable (depending on applicant’s preference)

Position Type: Full Time (37.5-hour work week)

Compensation: $154,000 - $168,913
