Saint Louis University School of Medicine seeks an accomplished physician leader to serve as the Department Chair of Internal Medicine. Internal Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine at SLU, with clinicians and scientists who are national and international leaders in vaccines, liver, lupus, kidney, aging, and other fields. The Department offers state-of-the-art facilities, a faculty of outstanding scholars, and rapidly expanding research programs. With the recent integration of the School’s physician practice organization into SSM Health, the Department of Internal Medicine is poised for growth across each of its mission areas of education, research, and patient care.

The Chair reports to the Vice President, Medical Affairs, and Dean of the School of Medicine with regard to the Department’s academic mission of education and research and to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs with regard to its patient-care mission. 

 

The Department of Internal Medicine at SLU includes more than 145 physicians and scientists, twelve accredited residency and fellowship training programs, and over $17 million in research in FY 2021. The Chair is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the Department functions, including education, research, and clinical services.

 

 Qualifications

The Chair must be an MD/DO or equivalent, hold current Board certification in Internal Medicine or a medicine subspecialty, and be eligible for an unrestricted Missouri state medical license. Additionally, the Chair will have credentials that merit appointment in the School of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full professor.

 

Candidates will possess an approachable, servant-leader style and will demonstrate excellence in teaching, clinical practice, program development, and experience in research administration. They will have a record of cooperative working relationships and effective use of interpersonal and communication skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy. The Chair will be capable of establishing a culture of physician engagement, accountability, and shared responsibility for patient safety and the quality of care, and will bring a willingness to learn and collaborate in all aspects of the School’s strategic approach to education, research, patient care, diversity, and inclusion.
