Position Announcement

Northwell Health seeks nominations and applications for an exceptional physician leader for the role of Vice Chair for Equity and Faculty Development, Department of Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Reporting to Dr. John Q. Young, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and Zucker Hillside Hospital, this physician leader will assume key responsibilities in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion and the development of faculty in the department.

In partnership with the Department Chair, the Vice Chair for Equity and Faculty Development will be responsible for developing the department’s faculty and for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in the department at the Zucker Hillside Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, and Cohens Children Medical Center. The Vice Chair will design and oversee a full range of faculty development initiatives, including mentoring, clinical, teaching, and research skill development, promotion, community-building, recognition and wellness initiatives. The Vice Chair will develop, align, and/or integrate a range of new and existing initiatives, policies, and procedures into a cohesive platform that foster a more inclusive, welcoming, supportive, and diverse environment and address the structural inequities which impact our department, our patients, and our communities.

Zucker Hillside Hospital 

Zucker Hillside Hospital is a renowned 236-bed Northwell behavioral health facility, known for its trailblazing clinical, teaching, and research programs. Over the past 30 years, it has been the site of multiple National Institute of Mental Health research centers focused on the treatment of schizophrenia, including a Clinical Research Center, an Intervention Research Center, and a Center for Intervention Development and Applied Research. These federally supported centers have provided Zucker Hillside with national and international recognition for its pioneering work in diagnosing and treating serious mental illness.

Inpatient services include adolescent, adult, geriatric, and women’s (perinatal psychiatry) units. Treatment specialties include early-phase treatment, depression, schizophrenia, peripartum mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar and personality disorders, psychotic disorders, medical/neurological illnesses with psychiatric symptoms, and Alzheimer's disease or related conditions. Zucker Hillside’s beautiful 22-bed inpatient women’s unit is the first in New York state and one of only a few in the U.S. to specialize in treating women with perinatal psychiatric illness. 

Outpatient programs serve all ages and encompass the full continuum of care. These services include health centers, partial hospital treatment programs, and a full range of psychiatric rehabilitation services. Programs for alcohol and chemical dependency are available both on our main campus and in numerous community-based sites. Additional specialized outpatient programs at Zucker Hillside include a Clozaril clinic, OCD clinic, bipolar disorder clinic, a crisis center, and college student programs. The goal at Zucker Hillside is to promote wellness and to reintegrate patients back into the community to work, attend school, socialize, and live independently.

Vice Chair of Faculty Development and Equity, Department of Psychiatry, Zucker Hillside Hospital 

The Vice Chair will oversee efforts to advance equity, celebrate diversity, and promote inclusion, in alignment with the Offices of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the Northwell Center for Equity of Care. This physician leader will design and implement initiatives that increase equity in clinical care and outcomes, diversity in the workforce (recruitment, retention, compensation, recognition, promotion), and inclusion in the culture (e.g., anti-oppression trainings). The Vice Chair will foster a departmental culture that values, celebrates and nurtures the successful development of faculty at all career stages. This physician leader will design and implement initiatives to advance the mission areas of clinical practice, education, scholarship and research, and leadership with a particular emphasis on mentorship, academic promotion, career and skill development, faculty wellness, team building, professionalism, and diversity. The leader will advise on the design of an academic-RVU system that seeks to support critical non-billable, mission-aligned activities central to the academic mission of the department. 

To be successful, the Vice Chair for Equity and Faculty Development must exhibit a relationship-based and collaborative approach to partnering with the Department’s faculty members. In collaboration with the Department Chair and Service Line leadership, this physician leader will identify opportunities in building and maintaining a caring culture where every team member and patient is treated with dignity and respect, and feels welcomed, valued and heard. Additionally, The Vice Chair will be a champion for faculty/staff growth - recruitment, retention, career advancement including academic promotion and overall satisfaction. The position requires a leader with strong communication skills and the clinical and academic credibility to support faculty as they acquire the knowledge and skills essential for becoming successful researchers, effective educators, outstanding clinicians, and institutional leaders. This physician leader will have a passion for excellence and be well respected among his/her colleagues. They will also require a high-level understanding of the academic trends and needs within a nationally regarded academic behavioral health institution and a passion for advancing initiatives in cultural competency, diversity, and inclusivity furthering Northwell’s commitment to creating a diverse team of physicians.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to scope of role, level of experience, education, specialty/subspeciality, credentials, academic accomplishments, clinical productivity, quality metrics, patient experience, site/location internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The base compensation range listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
