Our research program is the second largest in VHA with an annual funding of approximately $58 million. National VHA research centers at VA Palo Alto include: Cooperative Studies Program; Health Services Research and Development, Center for Innovation to Implementation, Health Economics Resource Center; Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center; Mental Illness Research Education Clinical Center; National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD); VHA Performance Evaluation Resource Center; VHA National Center for Collaborative Health Care Innovation; Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center; VHA Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards, War Related Illness and Injury Study Center, and Office of Public Health Surveillance and Research.
Pay: $288,204-$306,600 per year
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
MHRRTPs in VA Palo Alto system
1. Menlo Park Campus (MP or MPD)
a. Domiciliary Rehabilitation Residential Program aka, the Dom
i. Combination of housing track (180 days) and recovery track (90 days)
ii. Multi D team: PhD, LCSW, Additional therapist, Peer support therapist. All
residential programs have and MD or NP for medical care, 24/7 RNs/LVNs, with
nurse mangers.
iii. Pre pandemic capacity about 80-100. Pandemic capacity about 40-50 with single
occupancy.
iv. Men and women in same program. Women have private/locked rooms.
v. Housing track goals include reintegration back into society with jobs and
housing, partnering with outpatient resources.
vi. CBT/ACT based, some DBT. Individual trauma work done on select cases.
b. Trauma Recovery Service (TRS) which consists of residentials (TRP) and IOP
vii. TRP is broken up in to two different programs that are housed in two buildings:
Mens (MTRP) and Womens (WTRP)
viii. Stays are about 90 days with flexibility
ix. Pre pandemic capacity (MTRP = 30) (WTRP =10), about half of that now
x. Multi D team: with additional focus on art therapy, yoga
xi. Focused on delivery of skill building with DBT and trauma focused therapies
with CPT/PE and they are starting to do EMDR
2. Palo Alto Campus (PA)
c. Foundations of Recovery (FOR)
xii. 28 day program
xiii. Pre pandemic 19 bed, now about 14 beds.
xiv. Takes more acute medical and psychiatric patient given proximity to ER and
inpatient psychiatry. Many of our referrals to the MP campus come from FOR.
xv. Smaller Multi D team.
3. Affiliation with Stanford. We have rotating medical and psychiatry trainees (medical students,
pharm students, residents). Also interaction with Stanford/local psychology trainee programs.
Education boards to sit on.
4. Weekly psychiatry meetings to discuss case consultation across programs.
5. Weekly psychiatry and medicine meetings to discuss complicated cases and cross program
referrals.
6. All our programs have daily team meetings that encourage collaboration between team
members.
7. Diverse population: depression/anxiety, SUD, ADHD, SMI, depression, 18-80s yo, women and
men, LGBT+ care.
8. Access and collaboration with TMS/ketamine teams
