Position Description: The National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) seeks to fill the position of NCI Clinical Director. This is an exciting opportunity to oversee a large, cutting edge and growing clinical research program housed in the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the NIH Clinical Center. Reporting directly to the NCI Director, the NCI Clinical Director is the senior official to oversee quality of medical care delivered to patients participating in clinical trials in the NCI Center for Cancer Research.
The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) (https://ccr.cancer.gov/) is the basic and clinical intramural research program of the NCI. The NCI intramural program develops and conducts clinical research at the NIH Clinical Research Center (CRC) on the NIH Bethesda campus, the world’s largest dedicated research hospital with 242 inpatient beds, 90 day hospital stations, and multiple outpatient clinics. CCR’s intramural clinical research program is far-reaching and active, accounting for over 30 percent of the total medical effort at the NIH Clinical Center. The CCR clinical program sees approximately 4,000 to 5,000 patients per year in over 300 studies. Approximately 1,800 new adult and pediatric patients are enrolled annually. Research activities are multidisciplinary, spanning oncologic diseases—from brain, lung, prostate, breast, and gynecologic malignancies, leukemia, lymphoma, renal cancers and melanoma—to understanding rare cancers and genetic and virally-driven cancers. Research also develops new treatment approaches in transplantation, cellular therapy, surgery, radiation, and immunotherapy. CCR also provides clinical services to all of NIH through its Radiation Oncology Branch, Laboratory of Pathology, and three surgical branches.
The incumbent will lead the CCR Office of the Clinical Director (https://ccr.cancer.gov/about/office-of-the-clinical-director) with a staff of 240 and will oversee a budget of ~ $185M. Through the Office of the Clinical Director, the successful candidate will advise the CCR Director on the allocation of clinical support resources to CCR investigators to facilitate the conduct of clinical research, including space, budget, and personnel, will ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and informed consent, will implement the highest level of patient care and safety in research protocols, and will oversee review of clinical research protocols, for scientific excellence, relevance to mission and feasibility. The Clinical Director will also lead an outreach program to promote accrual of a diverse patient population and will oversee credentialing and training activities including the ACGME-accredited NIH Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program, an established world leader that has trained over 600 academic physician scientists. The NCI Clinical Director will be part of CCR, NCI and NIH leadership.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess an M.D., M.D./Ph.D, or equivalent degree, and have demonstrated scientific leadership and/or demonstrated research experience in a clinical research program of national and international standing in oncology related research. The successful candidate will have a compelling vision for the future of clinical research and trials, proven experience in managing and directing a clinical research program, and well-honed administrative and interpersonal skills. The NCI seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to maintain the Institute’s clinical research efforts at the forefront of science. The successful candidates will be well-known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, based on their clinical research achievements. Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and lead a clinical research program involving extensive internal and external collaboration and must be able to build, mentor, motivate and maintain a culturally diverse staff. The incumbent must hold or obtain the required medical credentials that allow credentialing in the NIH Clinical Center.
SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate.
