The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for an outstanding accomplished professional to provide administrative leadership and assume full responsibility for all areas of management in the role of Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine in the Division of Internal Medicine.

The candidate should be an accomplished clinical leader with a strong clinical and academic reputation and the leadership competencies to further develop the department toward recognition as the nation’s leading onco-hospitalist program, including faculty recruitment and development, quality improvement, education and research, long range planning, finance and budget, and resource allocations.

The Chair will actively engage in, encourage and foster development of quality improvement programs, clinical research, and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department and will practice onco-hospitalist care in an exemplary manner. This position entails responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the content of the didactic program and technical training for the department’s trainees. Additional responsibilities include pursuit of appropriate funding mechanisms in support of research activities and representing the department at the local, state, and national levels. The Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine.

Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree and board certification applicable to the practice of Hospital Medicine. Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure. At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in academic hospital medicine, preferably in an oncologic setting.
  • A record of exceptional outcomes-driven patient care in academic settings.
  • Knowledge of the principles of, and practical experience in, safety and quality improvement in hospital care.
  • Established in clinical and/or quality improvement research.
  • Track record of faculty and/or trainee mentoring and career development.
  • Demonstrated skills in programmatic development.
  • Evidence of leadership qualities essential to effective problem-solving, inspiring their team, and promoting accountability and collaboration across the institution.
  • Ability to function effectively in a matrixed organization characterized by complex intra- and inter-disciplinary relationships. Experience in bridging multidisciplinary collaborations between diverse functional areas including solid tumor clinical services, emergency and ICU services, supportive and palliative care, COVID-related care, and 24/7 inpatient care. Demonstrated administrative competence to ensure the fiscally sound and efficient day-to-day operations of the department.
