Better Health for All

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), a large public teaching hospital, affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine, in San Jose CA, is seeking two full-time BC/BE infectious diseases physicians to work in AIDS medicine and one part-time (0.8 FTE) BC/BE infectious diseases physician tp work in our TB clinic.

We offer the unparalleled opportunity to gain the long-term personal and professional satisfaction of serving our patients and our diverse community, while teaching the next generation of health care providers, in one of the best places to live in the United States.

About the organization

Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System (SCVHHS) is the second-largest County-owned health and hospital system in California and is committed to improving the health of the 1.9 million people of Santa Clara County.  As of March 2019, SCVHHS is comprised of three hospitals:  Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC - a 731-bed central hospital), O’Connor Hospital (OCH - 358 licensed beds), and Saint Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH – 93 licensed beds); in addition SCVHHS includes  a large primary care network comprised of eleven  health centers throughout the County, several urgent care clinics, a broad-range of specialty services in our Valley Specialty Center, comprehensive dental services, a large behavioral health department, public health, EMS, and Valley Health Plan.

SCVMC itself hosts five residency training programs and partners with Stanford University Medical Center for the training of residents and fellows in many Stanford-based specialties.  SCVMC also features a Level 1 Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, ABA verified Burn Center, Primary Stroke Center, and a nationally recognized CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Center.  Owing to its geographic location and specialty offerings, SCVMC not only serves the County, but also the larger region.

Providers in our health system also have the opportunity to use our integrated electronic health record (Epic), which brings together system-wide patient information.   Recently, the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized SCVMC for achieving its highest level of success (Stage 7), based on our continuous innovation and optimization of our inpatient and outpatient EHR.

About the community

SCVMC is located in San Jose, California in the heart of Silicon Valley, offering a diverse choice of cultural, recreational, and lifestyle opportunities.  Our physicians live in a range of communities, including urban (e.g., San Francisco), university (e.g., Palo Alto), high tech (e.g., many cities of Silicon Valley), mountain (e.g., Los Gatos), beach (e.g. Santa Cruz), and rural/agricultural (e.g., Morgan Hill and Gilroy).  Situated in one of the most desirable regions of the country – only 45 minutes from the Monterey Bay and three hours from the Sierra Nevada – our physicians enjoy a very high quality of life.

About the Division of Infectious Diseases (ID)

The division of ID includes an inpatient ID consult service and three outpatient clinics (TB, PACE, and General ID). All three clinics provide guidance via e-consults across the healthcare system. As a member of the Department of Medicine, the division serves as a key training site for SCVMC residents and Stanford University ID fellowship program. ID fellows additionally rotate through the TBC/RHAP.

The Tuberculosis Clinic and Refugee Health Assessment Program (TBC/RHAP) cares for 85-100 active TB patients a year, evaluates 450-650 Class B immigrants (new immigrants with abnormal pre-immigration chest films) and follows 750+ patients with latent TB annually. The TBC physicians work closely with the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department and SCVMC to manage about half of all Santa Clara County TB cases. The RHAP currently provides services for 100-200 refugees and asylees. Leadership opportunities are available.

The PACE (Partners in AIDS Care & Education) clinic serves over 1400 PLWHA in Santa Clara County. The clinic is one of the largest Ryan White funded clinics in the bay area and functions as a medical home model for our patients. Our clinic functions as a multidisciplinary clinic with ID/HIV physicians, Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Nurses, Outreach specialists and benefit counselors that work collaboratively and closely with our public health department and internal divisions to manage and coordinate care for PLWHA and patients interested in PrEP/PEP. Physicians work closely with Stanford University School of Medicine Infectious Diseases divisions as well as collaboration with their medical school in the mentor-ship and training of a wide range of trainees including Infectious Diseases fellows. The General ID clinic provides consultative care on a large spectrum of ID disorders including bone, joint and hardware infections, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, and endemic mycoses primarily coccidioidomycosis. A robust OPAT program provides consultation and monitoring for patients on outpatient IV antibiotics. The inpatient general infectious diseases consult service team usually consists of a Stanford University Infectious Diseases fellow, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center internal medicine resident and residents from Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara giving robust opportunities for mentorship and teaching. Academic appointments are with Stanford University. Most physicians in ID/PACE have some administrative involvement in the organization as well.

The general ID clinic cares for patients with complicated infections referred from primary care, community physicians as well as hospital discharges. There is an active outpatient parental antibiotic therapy program (OPAT) as well as an inpatient antibiotic stewardship program.
