Job Title:  Executive Director, Institutional Review Committee (IRC)

Department:  Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environment Review

Reports to:  Vice President, Sponsoring Institutions

The following describes the various aspects of the designated job.  Some or all of these aspects may be changed over time, with or without notice, at the sole discretion of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I).

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States (U.S.) on a full-time basis.  The ACGME will not provide employment sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B Visa or other U.S. employment authorization).

JOB OVERVIEW

The Executive Director, Institutional Review Committee (IRC), is accountable for: planning, preparing for, and organizing all IRC meetings; ensuring adherence of the institutional review process with ACGME policies and procedures; ensuring timely, accurate, and appropriate follow-up for all IRC decisions and actions; managing all communications related to accreditation and recognition of sponsoring institutions; and, providing information and guidance to designated institutional officials (DIOs) and other institutional leaders to assist them in understanding and complying with ACGME processes and requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directing all activities related to the accreditation and recognition review of sponsoring institutions, which includes: Analysis of annual institutional data and other data submitted by sponsoring institutions to support the IRC’s evaluation of sponsoring institutions; Development and publication of national accreditation and recognition standards, policies, and procedures for review of sponsoring institutions; Oversight of the preparation of agenda materials and timely notification of IRC actions, in consultation with the IRC Chair and Vice Chair; and, Evaluating and improving the process of review and institutional accreditation and recognition, in collaboration with the IRC.

Managing the dissemination of information for the ACGME’s Monitoring Committee and meeting other internal and external requests as appropriate.

Providing accurate interpretation of the Institutional Requirements on behalf of the IRC for internal and external constituencies.

Facilitating and supervising activities related to accreditation and recognition standards, and the institutional accreditation and recognition process.

Acting as a liaison to agencies and organizations concerned with graduate medical education.

Supporting the development of DIOs relevant to all aspects of institutional accreditation, and their leadership role for graduate medical education within their respective sponsoring institutions and developing programs to meet those needs.

In collaboration with the ACGME Education Department, developing and implementing educational offerings to advance the professional development of the DIO, institutional coordinators, and other GME leaders.

Establishing and maintaining appropriate interactions with the staff of specialty-specific Review Committees and staff focused on the common interests and concerns related to institutional oversight of programs in the context of institutional accreditation.

Acts as a liaison between the IRC and specialty-specific Review Committees (RCs), the Council of Review Committee Chairs, and the CLER Evaluation Committee regarding institutional issues that affect sponsoring institutions to ensure understanding and appropriate implementation of the Institutional Requirements.

Oversight of the planning and implementation of IRC activities at the ACGME Annual Education Conference.

Collaborating with the leadership of CLER and the CLER Evaluation Committee in evaluating findings from the CLER program as potential additions to the Institutional Requirements.

Collaborating with the Director, Medically Underserved Areas/Populations (MUA/P) and GME, in implementing improvements for sponsoring institutions as part of the ACGME framework for MUA/P and GME.

Collaborating with the Director, Outreach and Collaboration, in planning and implementing activities of the National Learning Community for Sponsoring Institutions.

Collaborating with all other ACGME departments to improve the accreditation and recognition process, particularly as pertaining to issues related to institutional accreditation. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study.
  • At least three years of Director-level experience in graduate medical education, accreditation, or certification systems, research, and administration.
  • At least three years of experience leading a team in quality improvement, systems thinking, and team building skills.
  • Experience leading change management efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact credibly with all levels of professional staff, including senior executives, physician leaders, and other educators involved in graduate medical education and health care administration.
  • Knowledge of higher education programs, including their structure, application, and accreditation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally, with polished public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread documents for an academic audience.
  • Proficiency in using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Experience using web-based software applications.

Preferred

  • ABD or earned terminal degree in a relevant field of study.

  • Demonstrated sound judgment, common sense and dependability.
  • Ability to process existing and new information and apply information to novel situations.
  • Skilled in working under tight timelines and comfortable balancing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Enthusiastic team player with a strong work ethic and demonstrated flexibility, particularly dealing with multiple cultures and over global time zones.
  • Superior organizational and workflow management skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS

  • This position is situated in a normal office environment with no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands. 
  • This position requires occasional travel outside the office. Candidates must be willing and able to travel to attend at least four-to-six out-of-state meetings per year, running from one-to-five days per meeting, including evenings and weekends.
  • This position requires some evening and weekend work in conjunction with IRC meetings, and a heavy time commitment, sometimes exceeding normal work hours, for meeting management, travel, and attendance.
  • During the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, many ACGME employees are working remotely. When it is appropriate to begin working in the Chicago office, your manager will work with you to determine if a flexible work schedule is available based on your specific role and responsibilities etc.
