  Overview:

The associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing renewal of WMed’s MD degree program in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the institution.  This includes: program operations; student performance; program evaluation; faculty recruitment; clinical site recruitment; and collaboration with faculty across the curriculum.  The associate dean for UME directly oversees three assistant deans (assistant dean for Foundations phase of curriculum, assistant dean for Clinical Applications phase of curriculum and assistant dean for Clinical Competency & IPE). 

The associate dean for Undergraduate Medical Education role is a 0.7 FTE role.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of MD curriculum assuring compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and Higher Learning Commission (HLC) policies
  • Oversight of all course, clerkship and discipline faculty and directors directly and through assistant deans
  • Serve as the primary leader in overseeing curriculum, including the academic schedule, course and clerkship scheduling and new initiatives
  • Responsible for maintenance and update of UME policies and procedures
  • Responsible for oversight of accommodations processes in delivery of curriculum and assessment as approved through Essential Abilities Committee
  • Responsible for oversight of student remediations and learning contracts as established by Medical Student Performance Committee processes including implementation of adverse actions (sanctions, monitoring of probation, dismissal)
  • Serve as an ex officio member of the Curriculum Committee, Medical Student Performance Committee, Misconduct Investigations Committee and Appeals Committee Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and other institutional committees as needed
  • Advise and manage budget and resource needs for the MD degree program
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs for student engagement in curriculum and operational improvement projects through designated student groups
  • Promotion of curricular innovation and education scholarship
  • Promotion of growth and success in the overall diversity of the student body Integration of institutional focus on health equity into curriculum and student competencies
  • Chair for the Integrations Subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee, which is responsible for operational oversight of all aspects of the MD program

  Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • MD/DO, PhD, or equivalent degree required.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in medical education administration and curricular development and implementation
  • A strong track record in educational scholarship
  • Administrative and leadership experience in medical education programming including development,
  • innovation and program evaluation Physicians with clinical responsibilities must maintain an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan, and maintain privileges at clinical sites corresponding with their clinical responsibilities.
  • Other health care providers with clinical responsibilities must maintain the appropriate license for their profession, and maintain privileges at clinical sites corresponding with their clinical responsibilities.
  • Must maintain a faculty appointment at the medical school. Academic rank of associate professor or professor with a primary appointment in the department.
  • Broad understanding of academic medical centers and faculty roles.
  • Broad knowledge organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

License, Registration, and Certifications:

  • Physicians with clinical responsibilities must have and maintain board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) specialty. Physicians with clinical responsibilities must Current licensure or eligibility to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program with 86 students per class.  The foundations phase of the curriculum is a systems-based model with content delivered through a Team Based Learning design.  A focus on service learning, cultural competence and clinical skills development occurs longitudinally.  The clinical phase of the curriculum is through discipline-based clerkships.  Current focus includes evaluation of opportunities for class growth, decompressed curriculum options, competency assessment frameworks and increased integration across the clinical phase.  There are two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
