Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic and Nazareth Hospital have an excellent full-time employment opportunity for an experienced physician to serve as Program Director of our Transitional Year Residency located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Transitional Year Program at Nazareth Hospital is committed to preparing the residents of diverse backgrounds to practice medicine with expertise, integrity, and compassion. Following a robust training program, graduates of the Transitional Year Residency will be well qualified to enter into Advanced Programs grounded in evidence-based knowledge and clinical skills needed to succeed as a physician. For those residents who have yet to decide on a career choice of specialty, this program offers broad based patient care experiences in various subspecialties of medicine that will help them make that decision.

Nazareth Hospital s 205 acute and 28 skilled beds accommodate over 8,000 admissions yearly. The Emergency Department serves over 51,000 patients each year. Acute rehabilitation, transitional care and hospice services are also located on the premises. A 29,000 square-foot ambulatory care center is located adjacent to the hospital and is connected by a short breezeway. Nazareth serves a diverse population of all ages with varied economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. This guarantees trainees exposure to a wide range of health issues.

In collaboration with the DIO and other residency program directors as needed, the Transitional Year Program Director will have the following duties and responsibilities:

Operational

  • Ensure that program meets all requirements for maintaining ACGME accreditation, assuring that graduates will succeed in meeting ACGME core competency requirements.
  • Prepare and submit all information required and requested by the ACGME, including but not limited to the program information forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS, Annual Institutional Reports and ensure that the information submitted is accurate and complete.
  • Prepare and submit summary of annual program review to Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Annual Institutional Review and assist DIO on institutional efforts to fulfill ACGME requirements.
  • Assist DIO with preparing the budget for the residency program.
  • Manage the written curriculum, goals and objectives, residency assignments and schedules for all rotations.
  • Notify DIO of any disciplinary actions taken against a resident, ensuring compliance with grievance and due process procedures as set forth in the Institutional Policies.
  • Monitor resident and faculty wellness.
  • Approve and oversee directors of rotations, as well as monitor resident supervision and experience at all participating rotation sites.
  • Implement policies and procedures, monitor and ensure compliance consistent with the institutional and program requirements for resident duty hours and the working environment, including moonlighting.
  • Preparation and submission of accurate and complete information requested by the GMEC as part of the institutional internal review process.
  • Chair any GME or resident related committees or subcommittees as needed or as recommended by DIO/GME Committee.
  • Clinical
  • Provide clinical care to patients presenting to the hospital or outpatient clinic.
  • Participate in clinical teaching of residents, off-service residents, and medical students
  • Participate in mentorship and shadowing of potential residency applicants and undergraduates exploring a career in medicine
  • Provide constructive feedback to learners on a daily, weekly and/or monthly basis through formal and informal feedback mechanisms

Educational

  • Provide formal and informal teaching in residency programs.
  • Oversee and participate in development of didactic, simulation, scholarly, and bedside educational curriculum as needed by the residency program.
  • Develop curriculum and activities concerning on-boarding and off-boarding of residents.
  • Develop strategies to ensure residents perform at the appropriate level pertaining to the in-training examination and their secondary specialty residency requirements.
  • Provide verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the program prior to completion.

Resident Competency Assessments

  • Participate in formal and informal feedback as well as semi-annual competency assessments of residents.
  • Provide guided mentorship to residents and create individualized learning plan as needed.
  • Monitors and reviews clinical experiences with Clinical Competency Committee and make determinations about resident promotion and remediation.
  • Participate in creation of formalized coaching, enhanced mentorship, and remediation plans for residents as needed.
  • Recruitment
  • Participate in national, regional, local, and branch campus recruitment events as appropriate.
  • Participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and assuring program compliance with the matching program rules and regulations.
  • Participate in interviews and final resident selection through the Match process.

Faculty Support/Development

  • Provide formal and informal mentorship to faculty.
  • Evaluate program faculty, select appropriate faculty and approve the continued participation of program faculty based on evaluation.
  • Assist in creation and delivery of a faculty development curriculum.
  • Support faculty with scholarly endeavors.
  • Provide ongoing daily support and education to clinical and core faculty
  • Work with the Program Directors of other residency programs to create a strong interprofessional working environment between specialties.
  • Research
  • Establish and maintain an environment of inquiry and scholarship with an active research program.
  • Coordinate and organize evidence based clinical discussions and journal clubs.
