Overview:
The Bassett Research Institute (BRI) at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY is seeking applicants to fill the position of Research Scientist and Director of the Center for Stress Health at the BRI.

Organization Description:
Bassett Healthcare Network is an integrated health care system that provides care and service to people living in an eight county region covering 5,600 square miles in Central New York.  The organization includes five corporately affiliated hospitals, as well as skilled nursing facilities, community and school- based health centers, and health partners in related fields.

Job Summary:
The BRI is embarking on an innovative mental health research path, called Stress Health, with the goal of improving access, quality, equity and value of mental health services in our rural area. The Center Director is expected to lead this initiative using internal funding to develop an externally-funded research program in Stress Health. 

Responsibilities:
The candidate will conduct research and publish in an area of relevance to rural mental health disparities, rural health care services, and the social determinants of health. The candidate will have expertise in mental health promotion and disease prevention, clinical trials, and/or applied prevention science and implementation science approaches. Research domains can include the Stress Health research topics that include resilience, suicide, stigma, depression, trauma, PTSD, addictions, mental health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, including clinical trials of novel agents, like psychedelics, for individuals with treatment resistant serious mental illness (SMI).The Stress Health initiative also will utilize and build upon transdiagnostic approaches and addressing subthreshold psychopathology. 
 
Methods include analyzing Epic electronic medical records and other existing data sets to identify clinically significant outcomes and trends. With support from the BRI Center for Biostatistics, the candidate will perform data analysis that goes beyond descriptive characterizations of population-level data sources (BRFSS, YRBS, birth and death, hospital, ED and outpatient data); and will conduct higher level analytics including but not limited to regression and predictive modeling. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and experience using Microsoft Office software (including Excel) is required. Experience with SAS, GIS software and mapping techniques is desirable. The candidate will prepare, organize and deliver scientific presentations that communicate research findings to professional audiences, policy makers, and the general public, including publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and at national scientific meetings. The candidate will report to the Director of the BRI and the Chief Academic Officer. 

Our organizational culture is highly collaborative, emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches to improving health. The BRI provides a strong research infrastructure for its research scientists in the areas of biostatistics, study design, data management, research computing, project management, IRB review, OSP administration, and patient recruitment for clinical trials through the Center for Clinical Research. Opportunities are available for collaborations with researchers within the BRI, and at Columbia University through the Columbia-Bassett affiliation and the Columbia-Bassett Medical School. The BRI has a strong collaborative relationship with public health practitioners within local health departments, NYS Department of Health, the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health as well as academic institutions. We are especially interested in candidates who will collaborate with other researchers, community-based organizations, government agencies and the Bassett Healthcare Network to develop, implement and test interventions that improve the mental health of communities most affected by rural health disparities.

Job Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate should possess a medical degree (MD) or PhD with 7 years of independent research experience including track record in conducting research in partnership with underserved populations, i.e. rural and/or economically disadvantaged communities.
  • Candidates should have research experience with both historical and current federal and/or private funding of research projects as a Principal Investigator in clinical, mental health and/or public health research.
