Carilion Clinic, headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia is recruiting for a full-time Physician Advisor to serve as physician expert and liaison between clinical staff, administrative personnel, and payers. The Physician Advisor (PA) conducts clinical reviews on cases referred by the care management team and/or other health care professionals to meet regulatory requirements in accordance with hospital objectives for assuring quality patient care and effective, efficient utilization of health care services. Responsibilities include screening for appropriateness of hospitalization and length of stay and utilization of resources, as well as recommending care coordination steps to include alternate treatment options and providing discharge planning advice. The PA reinforces evidence-based medicine best practices and adheres to criteria-based guidelines in the Carilion Clinic Utilization Review Plan. Duties include reviewing and providing physician perspective for policies that relate to care coordination, progression, patient access, care variation management and clinical documentation improvements. The PA ensures that requirements of the Joint Commission and other accrediting agencies specific to care coordination are fulfilled. This position is 80% administrative and 20% clinical.
Qualified candidates must have a degree from an accredited medical school with completion of an accredited residency and be board certified. Knowledge of care management, utilization review, and denial and appeal processes is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. Five years of recent experience in a hospital clinical practice and two years of experience in management are strongly preferred.
