Rush University Medical Center, a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution and the teaching hospital for Rush Medical, Nursing and Health Sciences Colleges of Rush University, located in downtown Chicago, invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

The successful candidate will provide strategic, innovative, and operational leadership, and will have responsibility and accountability for the clinical and academic performance of all sections within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. A strong record of collaborative leadership and commitment to excellence in clinical, research and academic service is essential. Ongoing research achievement, community engagement and educational excellence are highly desirable. The successful candidate must also be committed to mentoring faculty, trainees, and medical students. In addition, (s)he will have credentials that merit appointment as Associate Professor or Professor, will have an MD or equivalent degree, will be board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, will possess a demonstrated commitment to innovation, and will have the leadership skills necessary for guiding faculty development and advancement across research, clinical and academic missions. As a department leader, the Chairperson will provide an energetic and inventive vision for maintaining and growing clinical, educational and research programs, developing strategic interdisciplinary teams for furthering research, and continuing faculty development.

The Department has a long tradition of excellence and expertise in many clinical domains. It currently includes 10 physiatrists, 1 advanced practice provider, 2 RNs, and 4 CMAs and offers subspecialty expertise in traumatic brain injury, stroke, neuromuscular disease, movement disorders, orthopedic and spine injuries, pelvic floor dysfunction along with pediatric rehabilitation. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is also an integral part of the Neurosciences Service Line that was established in 2019 which includes Neurosurgery, Neurological Sciences and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. In addition, the department faculty actively collaborate with other departments throughout the medical center on a variety of research projects, including stem cell implantation in acute and complete cervical spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury outcomes and functional (psychogenic) movement disorders. The Department provides clinical services at multiple locations across Rush University System for Health including Rush University Medical Center, Rush Oak Park Hospital, Rush Oakbrook, Rush South Loop, Rush River North, Rush Lincoln Park, and the Road Home Program. The Department also has a residency program that is a fully accredited four-year training program which accommodates four residents per year and provides training to build a strong foundation for excellence in patient care and a strong focus on education. The exposure to diverse patient populations throughout the four-year program prepares residents for subspecialty training. In September 2020, Rush University System for Health and Select Medical announced a joint venture to open a new hospital and to manage operations of 66 physical therapy centers throughout the greater Chicago and northwest Indiana region. The anticipated completion of the Rush Specialty Hospital is 2023.
