MaineHealth Medical Group (MHMG), Northern New England’s largest multi-specialty medical group, is seeking a dynamic ambulatory clinical leader to serve as its inaugural Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

MHMG is comprised of approximately 1,100 Physicians, 650 APPs, and nearly 5,000 Care Team members. It unifies the MaineHealth system’s 10 hospitals and more than 200 specialty and primary care practices in Maine and New Hampshire. MHMG’s clinical mission is driven by being patient-centered, striving for continuous improvement, promoting clear communication and advancing medical knowledge. Its goal is to deliver on the MaineHealth vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.

The CMO will serve as the MHMG’s senior executive clinical leader responsible for physician performance and continuous improvement in safety, quality and patient clinical outcomes. The CMO will assure physician compliance with MHMG, MaineHealth and third party payer standards. The CMO will lead the development of clinical standards, protocols and pathways across the Medical Group and will oversee the strategic advancement of the Medical Group Specialty Councils and the Ambulatory Clinical Standards Council. This position will serve as the ambulatory CMO representative at the System level.

The CMO is part of the MHMG leadership team and reports to the President of MHMG. The CMO serves in a dyad partnership with the MHMG COO and works closely with other MHMG team members to achieve team goals. The VP of Population Health will report directly to the CMO, and the VP of Ambulatory Quality will have a dotted line reporting structure. Nine Physician Leaders at the Local Health Systems will also report into the CMO for their MHMG roles. As Clinical Specialty Groups are further developed, the leaders supporting the group-wide specialties will report to the CMO.

The successful candidate will be a self-starting leader and have the proven ability to function within a complex and evolving environment. Ambulatory leadership experience is required. Experience in a medical group setting and familiarity with an operational/clinical dyad structure is preferred. The CMO is a predominately administrative role with the potential opportunity to maintain clinical practice at the discretion of the individual.

Essential Functions:

Clinical Quality

  • Maintains an active role in Quality Committees and Quality efforts in the MHMG practices, and throughout the overarching MaineHealth system quality initiatives.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Quality, MHMG to advance quality initiatives and further develop the ambulatory quality infrastructure.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Quality and health system Chief Quality Officer in facilitating discussions with MHMG Physician Leaders and Local Health System CMOs to prioritize and select system-wide ambulatory quality goals and objectives, and to achieve system-wide targets on ambulatory quality measures.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Quality, VP of Ambulatory Patient Care Services, and health system VP of Patient Experience to prioritize and select system-wide ambulatory patient experience goals and objectives, and to achieve system-wide targets on ambulatory patient experience measures.


Physician Leadership

  • Uses leadership skills to establish functional working relationship with the Physician Leaders of the MHMG Team. Works closely with MHMG Management Team to develop and refine management and business skills necessary to provide effective local physician leadership.
  • Interacts regularly with physician and administrative leadership at Local Health Systems to ensure that MHMG goals are being met and that services provided by the MHMG- practices are meeting the needs of MHMG.
  • Participates on behalf of the MHMG in various committees where physician presence and input is necessary and prudent.
  • Meets regularly with the MHMG Physician Leaders and Specialty Leaders to discuss clinical issues and practice clinical performance. Provides MHMG Physician Leaders and Specialty Leaders with ongoing feedback and prepares an annual performance review related to the administrative duties they perform.
  • Works closely with the MHMG leadership to develop and regularly update physician performance review tools.


Planning and Development

  • Evaluates, in an ongoing fashion, the clinical service needs of the patients seen at the MHMG – Local Health System sites and introduces innovative methods for improving and expanding patient services.
  • Participates in the development of a strategic plan for the MHMG. Seeks and evaluates opportunities for expanded service through outreach, where feasible and prudent.
  • Identifies opportunities for the further development of MHMG specialty councils and MHMG clinical programs and works with MHMG leadership to approve and implement these plans.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Patient Care to implement clinical standards across MHMG via the MHMG Clinical Standards Committee and other appropriate venues.
  • Collaborates with the system CMOs and attends CMO Councils and other forums to represent MHMG.
  • Seeks innovative methods for improving and expanding patient services, understanding the needs for various practices. This would include enhancing collaboration between practices.

Business and Clinical Operations

  • Works closely with MHMG leadership to evaluate financial performance related to physician performance in the practices, identifying issues and concerns.
  • Works with Physician Leaders to optimize clinical and financial performance across the practices of MHMG.

Academic Operations

  • Works closely with medical education executive leadership and MHMG leadership to evaluate the MHMG’s participation in mission critical education and research efforts identifying expectations, monitoring compliance and evaluating fiscal needs.
  • Collaborates with the academic Chairs to advance the academic mission of MH.

Promote a Culture of Safety

  • Advocates for provider wellness and engagement.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Quality, VP of Ambulatory Patient Care Services, and health system Chief Quality Officer to prioritize and select system-wide ambulatory patient safety goals and objectives, and to achieve system-wide targets on ambulatory patient safety measures.
  • Partners with the VP of Ambulatory Quality and MHMG Physician Leaders to respond to patient safety events and complaints in a timely manner, to address relevant peer review concerns if required, and to provide physician peer support as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: MD or DO. Master’s Degree (MBA or MHA) preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years' progressive and relevant healthcare management experience. Physician practice leadership experience.
  • Ability to provide direction and inspire people to accomplish organization goals.
  • Strong focus and demonstrated interest in quality.
  • Clinical excellence.
  • Ability to understand and appreciate the differences and similarities of clinical practice across the MHMG practice entities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated communication skills.
  • Broad understanding of management and finance.
