Job Description

The Office of the Clinical Director (OCD), Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized endocrinologist to serve as a senior clinician and program director of the ACGME-accredited adult endocrinology fellowship within the Inter-institute Endocrinology Training Program (IETP); to lead the Blood Glucose Management Service (BGMS) that provides consultative clinical services within the NIH Clinical Center; and to participate in a clinical research program in an area of Diabetes and Endocrinology.  This position is part of the NIHs world-class intramural research program (IRP).  This position will require at least 50% time and effort in directing the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program in Adult Endocrinology and 25% time to BGMS;  the remaining 25% time could be devoted to a part-time opportunity to conduct clinical research in collaboration with NIDDK investigators.

The program director would oversee the Adult Endocrinology fellowship program, or IETP, which enrolls up to 6 new clinical trainees per year.  The incumbent would be responsible for devising a dynamic educational program for the fellows.  The incumbent would oversee the selection, credentialing, scheduling, evaluating, and mentoring of fellows in concert with faculty members.  The program director would be responsible for ensuring the fulfillment of all elements required by the ACGME to maintain program accreditation and would be required to report to the NIH institutional graduate medical education committee on a regular basis.  The program director will serve as an attending physician at the NIH Clinical Center and conduct clinical protocols or trials.  The incumbent will have access to appropriate administrative resources to support the ACGME-approved Endocrinology training program as well as access to personnel resources including nurses, study coordinators, and nurse practitioners.

About the IETP, BGMS and the Clinical Center

NIDDK offers a two-to-three year, ACGME-accredited training program in adult Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.  The endocrine faculty come from multiple institutes including the NIDDK, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).  The endocrine surgical faculty come from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The IETP also partners with the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) to enhance trainee exposure and promote health equity. This program is open to physicians who are well grounded in clinical internal medicine and is designed to provide trainees with the high-quality clinical and laboratory skills that will enable them to pursue careers in academic medicine.  The program offers a blend of general and specialized endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism experiences encompassing diverse pathologies, allowing fellows to gain comprehensive training in the pathophysiology of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.  The IETP fellowship program is housed within the Office of the Clinical Director (OCD), NIDDK.  The NIDDK intramural research program has a diverse portfolio that conducts clinical, translational, and basic science as well as epidemiology research into human diseases related to diabetes, endocrinology, and obesity.

The Clinical Center is the largest hospital in the world that is devoted exclusively to clinical research.  Patients who are cared for in the Clinical Center are afflicted by a wide variety of diseases.  The BGMS Consultation Service is an essential consultation service in the Clinical Center and provides state-of-the-art care to patients.  Patients who are cared for have complicated and challenging problems related to the management of diabetes and blood glucose.  Clinical research activities initiated from within the Branch involve patients with diabetes, endocrinology disorders, and obesity.  Branch members are also involved in many collaborative clinical research projects that include studies of patients with diabetes, endocrinology, obesity, and many other inherited and sporadic diseases.

Location

The IETP fellowship and BGMS consultation service are operated out of the NIH Clinical Center that is located on the campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.

Eligibility/Salary

The ideal candidate will possess an M.D. (or equivalent) degree, demonstrate expertise in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism, management of a clinical fellowship program and demonstrate a record of excellence in clinical research, and oversight of complex clinical protocols.  Current board certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM) is highly desired to direct the IETP fellowship program.  The ideal candidate will have at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience; hold a permanent, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, retirement, and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available.  Candidates may be eligible for the NIH Loan Repayment Program (http://www.LRP.NIH.gov).  This position is not restricted to U.S. citizens, but applicants must be eligible to be credentialed in the Clinical Center to be considered.
