Position Mission

The Neurology Service Line at Northwell Health is seeking a full-time Stroke Medical Director to join the faculty at our Comprehensive Stroke Center at North Shore University Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a high acuity environment managed and supported by a very experienced team. This candidate is responsible for the stroke program across the Health System. You will report to the Department Chair, to direct, identify, implement & monitor the standardization of best practices.

As a leader, you will be a contributing member of the hospital leadership team. You will manage the Stroke Program Team and lead Neurology Service Line Performance Improvement initiatives as well as lead the System Enterprise Stroke Initiative. The newly appointed Medical Director will act as a liaison between hospital administration & the stroke team.

Participation in hospital-wide improvement processes is imperative in partnership with service-line leadership to expand, develop, implement, and promote the best care for the patients we seek to serve.

As an educator, you will collaborate with medical school leadership on the design and implementation of educational curriculums and train the next generation of physicians at The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The program fully supports a stroke fellowship program fully integrated with Neurology’s Telestroke and Interventional Program.

Our Vision

The Neurology Service Line now supports 16 stroke centers throughout the health system: 2 Joint Commission and New York State Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center (North Shore University Hospital & Lenox Hill Hospital), 1 Joint Commission and New York State Primary Stroke Center (Northern Westchester Hospital); and 14 Department of Health designated Primary Stroke Centers (Staten Island University Hospital North, Staten Island University Hospital South, Phelps Memorial Hospital, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, LIJ Valley Stream, LIJ Forest Hills, Glen Cove Hospital, Syosset Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Mather Hospital and South Shore Hospital. South Shore Hospital received to Joint Commission Thrombectomy accreditation as of May 2021.

Northwell stroke centers treated 15% of all strokes in NYS. Northwell emergency departments treated 15% of NYS patients with IV thrombolytic and 10% with Thrombectomy in 2020.

Neurology’s vision is to continue to advance efforts to become Thrombectomy Capable designations as well as Joint Commission Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center designations or primary stroke centers.

Nationally-Recognized Research Institute with State-of-the-Art Laboratories

The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research are composed of more than 1,500 clinicians, scientists and staff who work in laboratories and clinical research programs in collaboration with clinicians and patients throughout the many facilities of Northwell Health. Every year, more than 15,000 patients and volunteers participate in over 2,000 research studies.  Our state-of-the-art laboratories provide the infrastructure needed to conduct groundbreaking, disease-oriented research. It also houses the largest genotyping facility in the state of New York. The Feinstein Institute ranks in the top 6th percentile of all National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants awarded to research centers. The Feinstein Institute has produced more than 200 patents in 80 distinct technologies and has generated a dozen successful biotech start-ups.

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:

Education and Experience

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited College of Medicine Board Certified in Neurology and cerebro-vascular disease Must be licensed as a physician in the State of New York Proven leadership experience with a minimum of 5 years of experience Nationally recognized Stroke Expert and Researcher

Responsibilities and First-Year Aspirations

The newly appointed Stroke Medical Director will be expected to achieve the following goals in the first twelve months of their tenure:

  • Earn the trust and confidence of the regional players and hospital leaders, administrators at each ambulatory location, physicians and staff throughout Northwell Health.
  • Ensure high quality patient care through development and standardization of care processes and protocols, educational seminars, metrics, outcome measures and process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop interdisciplinary collaborations with the Feinstein Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to expand and enhance research programs, with an emphasis on expanding access to clinical trials.
  • Participate in research projects (basic/clinical/applied), and advise fellows and house staff.
