Vice President for Medical Affairs

Dean of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine

University of Iowa

The University of Iowa seeks a visionary, experienced, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Carver College of Medicine (VPMA/Dean). The VPMA/Dean will have full responsibility for the educational, research, and clinical missions of the fully integrated academic medical center. This is an extraordinary opportunity to lead and grow one of the nation's leading public medical schools and academic health system with the ability to advance the health of an entire state and beyond.

A member of the Association of American Universities since 1909 and the Big Ten Conference since 1899, the University of Iowa is one of the nation's premier public research universities with more than 32,000 students from 114 countries and all 50 states. Founded in 1847, it is the state's oldest institution of higher education and is located alongside the picturesque Iowa River in Iowa City.

The VPMA/Dean is responsible for overseeing University of Iowa Health Care - comprised of the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM), UI Physicians (UIP), and the UI Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) – as well as serving as the dean of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine (CCOM). The incoming VPMA/Dean will oversee a substantial capital facilities development plan, including the building of the North Liberty hospital, and a new patient tower, research building and ambulatory center on the healthcare campus.

UI Health Care has total operating revenues of nearly $3 billion. As a major tertiary- and quaternary-level health care facility, UI Hospitals & Clinics includes the main adult-care hospital and UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. In addition, there are outpatient clinic facilities on campus and at other locations in Johnson County and the state’s population centers such as Waterloo, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids. With more than 250 specialty and subspecialty clinics, UI Hospitals & Clinics offers the most comprehensive health care in the state.

More than 1,200 full-time faculty at the CCOM teach 600 medical students and 160 associated medical sciences students. Faculty also teach basic science classes to more than 5,000 undergraduate students from other UI colleges. In addition, more than 1,000 residents, fellows, and graduate students are trained in a range of specialties and subspecialties. The CCOM is the only allopathic medical school in Iowa. In fiscal year 2021, UI Health Care researchers garnered more than $283 million in external funding, including more than $147 million from the National Institutes of Health.

This position has accountability for the continued growth and impact of the medical enterprise for the university, and for the strategic comprehensive direction of UI Health Care. It offers a unique platform for an outstanding executive to build on the legacy of innovative leadership in cutting-edge research, medical education, and clinical care. Other roles include building strategic relationships for the delivery of healthcare by partnering with the university’s many other academic units as well as other stakeholders throughout Iowa.

The successful candidate will be a nationally and internationally recognized academic medical scholar, teacher, clinician, and administrator with a successful track record of leadership in a comparably prominent and complex setting. The VPMA/Dean will be passionate about promoting the community’s health as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. Candidates should also appreciate and advance the unique culture of the University of Iowa, including its strong emphasis on collaboration and entrepreneurship.

For full consideration, applications should be received by July 8th, 2022. The job description and search book can be found at https://vpma.jobs.uiowa.edu/.
