Chief Public Policy Officer

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chief Public Policy Officer (CPPO). The AAMC is seeking a forward- thinking CPPO who will join the executive Leadership Team and report directly to the President and CEO, David J. Skorton, MD, a visionary and energetic leader who is deeply passionate and enthusiastic about the future of academic medicine and health care.

The Chief will lead the AAMC’s public policy and advocacy efforts on governmental policies affecting the “health of people everywhere,” particularly those involving the AAMC member medical schools and teaching hospitals’ missions of education, research, clinical care, and community collaboration. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the association fulfills its responsibility to be the “voice of academic medicine” to policymakers and will serve as the sounding board amidst the surrounding energy of the CEO and executive team as it relates to health care policy.

Working in collaboration with the entire leadership team, including the Board of Directors, the CPPO will lead the identification, development, prioritization, and execution of health- related public policy and research activities. This individual will manage the AAMC’s relationships with health-related agencies at the federal and state level. They will also be a key influencer with political stakeholders, exuding political savviness and credibility on the Hill. The CPPO will be an external spokesperson and will engage with the media.

The CPPO will be responsible for the daily operations of the public policy and government relations cluster, a strong and dedicated team of 14, including 6 direct reports. This individual will also closely collaborate with members of the leadership team including the Chief Scientific Officer, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and the Chief Health Care Officer among others.

The AAMC team has built a collaborative environment of leaders in academic medicine, research, health care, and innovation. The organization is excited to invite a senior policy executive who has the energy and transformative ability to help them build upon the existing foundation and continue to be a leading association.

While applications and nominations will be accepted until the position is filled, interested parties are encouraged to submit a resume and a personal statement (2-3 pages) describing your interest in the role of Chief Public Policy Officer at the AAMC, why you believe you would be successful in the CPPO role based on your professional and/or lived experience, and why now is a good time for you to consider the opportunity for the position as soon as possible.

All nominations and applications should be sent electronically via e-mail (Microsoft Word or PDF attachments strongly preferred) to:
