The role of the Southcoast Health Colorectal & General Surgery Chief ( Chief ) and Department Chair for the Surgery department is critical to ensure the optimal quality, service, compliance, productivity and safety of the Corporation s providers (physicians and advance practice professionals) under their purview and to lead Colorectal & General Surgery Services system-wide. The Chief must provide leadership by demonstrating good judgment, excellent communication, guidance and oversight, and conflict management skills. The Chief will be accountable for the clinical quality and safety outcomes determined by the Surgery Care Center Physician in Chief and the operational outcomes determined by the Corporation s President.

  • Direct Reports: Physicians, Advanced Practice Professionals, Associate Medical Director(s).
  • Reports to: Physician in Chief, Surgery
  • Key relationships: Vice President, Operations, Surgery Care Center, Director of Operations, Surgery Care Center, Clinical Nurse Manager, Office Manager.
  • Large clinical component 80% / 20% Administrative
  • Board certified in General & Colorectal Surgery

Patient Care Delivery Outcomes

Working in a dyad model with the Corporation s Operational Management, the Chief will ensure:

  • Providers follow the Corporation s approved clinical guidelines, order sets, and regulatory standards
  • The physicians maintain board certification and privileges per medical staff bylaws. APPs maintain relevant certification and/or licensure.
  • All members of the care team function at the highest level commensurate with training and position.
  • Work toward the quadruple aim:
    • Improving the health of populations
    • Enhancing the patient experience
    • Reducing the per capita cost of health care
    • Improving the work life of clinicians and staff

Operational/Financial Outcomes

Working in a dyad model with the Corporation s Operational Management, the Chief will ensure:

  • The practices meet or exceeds the Corporation s patient access standards
  • All members of the team are utilized to their fullest capacity
  • Providers are meeting or exceeding individual productivity targets
  • Providers are optimizing referral expectations
  • There is a safe, consistent, and equitable after hour schedule with appropriate communication and oversight
  • Practices adhere to budgets
  • Local input is made in annual budget development
  • Local input is made into the Corporation s strategic plan
  • Providers are appropriately trained and adhering to Coding, Documentation and Billing Standards including E&M, Procedural based, ICD-10, and novel payment methods that will arise under Value Based Care
  • The practice aims for minimal staffing and provider turnover
  • Certified programs maintain their compliance and certification.

Quality Outcomes

Working in a dyad model with the Corporation s Operational Management, the Chief will ensure:

  • Providers are meeting or exceeding individual quality metrics as determined by the annual operating plan.
  • Patient satisfaction is meeting or exceeding target goals.
  • Providers are meeting or exceeding Care Center wide metrics.
  • The use of standard quality improvement tools such as rapid cycle improvement and root cause analysis are used and include provider participation.
  • Routine monitoring of provider performance and implementation of actions to address any issues.

Citizenship, Culture and Professional Development

Working in a dyad model with the Corporation s Operational Management, the Chief will ensure:

  • Providers effectively communicate with patients, staff, management, and peers in a collegial and collaborative manner
  • Providers attend scheduled meetings and ad-hoc meetings
  • Providers promote a culture of teamwork, compassion, collaboration, and overall Corporation improvement
  • Providers are accessible and utilize internal communication systems including Southcoast email and EPIC tools (Examples: MyChart, secure messaging, 3M360.)
  • Providers have ongoing mentorship from the Chief
  • The Chief cultivates clinical leadership within Surgery and the Corporation
  • Providers feel supported, heard, and engaged
  • Promotion and organization of ongoing CME sessions that foster specialty specific clinical knowledge enhancement
  • Promotion and organization of performance improvement education forums with providers including EHR optimization, CDI, Billing/Coding and other appropriate topics.
  • Providers maintain the highest professional and ethical standards
  • Corporation and Care Center leaders and managers are fully informed of all relevant issues.
  • The leadership work towards improving equity and diversity.
  • The Chief communicate regularly one-on-one with providers to provide support and development.
