POSITION SUMMARY
The Internist serves as a member of the CHC provider team providing primary health care services to the adult/adolescent patients of the organization. The Internist deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Additionally, the Internist provides consultation to other members of the health care delivery staff. Internists shall be qualified to serve on the active Medical Staff of hospitals utilized by CHC to provide inpatient services, assume on call after hours duties and supervise staff nurse practitioners and physician assistants. This position reports to the Department Head of Adult Medicine.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Achieve Results
- Practice medicine by caring for CHC adult/adolescent patients, according to the clinical protocols, as well as the policies and procedures of CHC.
- Develop a plan of care for each patient, including; complete medical history, physical examination, diagnosis and implement appropriate treatment plan/or referral when necessary, including hospitalization when necessary. Maintain patient responsibility and assure continuity of care.
- Document patient information and care in medical records.
- Participate in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Participate in PCMH model to achieve improvement of participant and population health, improve the patient experience and control healthcare cost.

PRIMARY TASKS AND DUTIES
- Perform comprehensive physical assessments by evaluating patient, analyzing records, reports, test results and treating internal disorders, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and problems of the lung, brain, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract, etc.
- Prescribe or administer medication, therapy, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
- Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients and provide patient and family with health education.
- Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
- Responsible for direct supervision of providers/midlevels as deemed appropriate by the Department Head and Chief Medical Officer.
- All other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of medical model and roles of physician. Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis.
- Knowledge of patient assessment techniques including taking medical histories, performing physicals, evaluating health status including state of wellness, and compliance with care recommendations.
- Knowledge of diagnosing and treating medical problems and developing care plans
- Knowledge of documentation in medical records in confidential manner
- Ability to make responsible decisions within scope of practice.
- Possess skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic and emotional patient data and accurately evaluate patient problems in person or via phone and provide appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of medicine with a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy
Successful completion of an approved residency program
Current license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland with unrestricted prescription privileges and current Controlled Dangerous Substances and Drug Enforcement Agency Number
Board Certified or Board Eligible (actively seeking certification) in Internal Medicine
