The Behavioral Health Medical Director oversees the inpatient psychiatric consult service at U.T. Medical Center.  The service consists of 3 part-time physicians and 4 full-time nurse practitioners.  The Behavioral Health service provides consultation on a variety of psychiatric problems such as suicide attempts/concerns, competency assessments, and inpatient psychiatric commitment decisions.  The Behavioral Health service follows patients in the hospital to facilitate care by making recommendations for further psychiatric care both inpatient and outpatient.

The Medical Director acts as the supervising physician for the nurse practitioners.  He/she meets daily with the nurse practitioners to review new consults and to answer any questions regarding the care plans of existing patients on the service.  The Medical Director is required to review the charting on a minimum of 30% of the nurse practitioner’s patient encounters.
