Academic Maternal Fetal Medicine

All Ranks

Non-Tenure Track

This is an exciting time at the University of Missouri to join the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health as a faculty member in the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Division! We are in an active growth period under new Division Director Dr. Debra Guinn, with intent to expand our academic pillars of patient care, research and education which are vital to providing exceptional women’s health care in central Missouri.

This is an excellent opportunity for a new fellowship graduate, but also for those with experience who are looking for a new opportunity to join us as we grow. Those who are physician-scientists will receive the support they need to achieve their desired goals whether their research be basic, translational, or clinical. Leadership opportunities abound for those qualified and interested in the same.  This is an amazing opportunity that provides the flexibility to forge your own career path based on your experience and professional aspirations!

Patient Care:

Clinically, the model for MFM services is an outpatient and inpatient consultative practice, with a strong Generalist faculty group who cover labor and delivery services. Currently, the clinic area for MFM contains an AIUM-accredited ultrasound unit, with outstanding sonographers all of whom are echo certified and genetic services. There is a 60 bed NICU governed by superb Neonatologists, with pediatric subspecialty services including surgery, urology, and cardiology. Construction on a new hospital pavilion for women's and children's services has already begun, with a summer of 2024 opening anticipated. This new pavilion will provide additional bed capacity with a doubling in Obstetric volume anticipated, allowing for even further integration of services for women’s and children’s programs.

Education:

As educators, the MFM Division is an integral part of University of Missouri (MU) medical student and post-graduate trainee education. We have a strong long-standing ACGME-accredited OBGYN residency program accepting four residents per year. There is full support, and all necessary services and volumes present to establish a Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship, with the intent to do so once our core MFM faculty are in place.

Research:

The Institute for Women’s Health Research (IWHR) includes more than 2,000 square feet of wet lab space, physician- scientists, 7 PhDs, technicians, and clinical research nurses. Areas of focus span basic through clinical research and include fertility and placental development; obstetric complications which increase risk of disease in later life; reproductive cancers; and pelvic floor and reproductive tract disorders. As of 2020, the department faculty have six NIH grants, including the NIH's Reproductive Scientist Development Program (RSDP). Additionally, the university is home to one of the top Animal Reproductive Biology Group programs in the nation, offering multiple opportunities for collaborations. Total research expenditures for the department in FY20 was over $2.4 million. The University of Missouri is the state’s flagship university and one of the few institutions in the country with colleges of medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, nursing, and health professions collaborating on one campus, allowing for endless collaboration opportunities.

Even more system wide opportunity for collaborations have evolved with the NextGen Precision Health Institute on campus that includes a new $220 million research facility that opened fall, 2021.  As we continue to look toward the future, MU has launched the MizzouForward initiative, the most important strategic investment to achieve research excellence and student success in the history of the university. This program will leverage existing institutional strengths and address national health and scientific priority areas through innovation and collaboration.  We anticipate hiring ~150 new faculty and the total MizzouForward effort will infuse $1.5 billion into the research infrastructure at MU.
