President and Chief Executive Officer
Lupus Research Alliance
New York, NY
The Lupus Research Alliance, the largest nongovernmental, nonprofit funder of lupus research worldwide, seeks a strategic and transformative leader to serve as its next President and Chief Executive Officer (President). The organization aims to transform treatment by funding the most innovative lupus research; fostering diverse scientific talent; stimulating research collaborations; and driving discovery towards better diagnostics, improved treatments, and ultimately a cure for lupus.
The LRA is known for its pioneering programs and unwavering commitment to the lupus community. To date, the LRA has funded over $220 million in support of lupus research and discoveries that have fundamentally improved quality of life for those suffering with this disease. Many of the LRA’s funded research grants have laid the groundwork for critical advances in the development of new treatments for lupus, such as the three new drugs introduced in 2021. The organization continues to grow in response to patients’ evolving needs and the rapid advances in scientific discovery. In addition to its extensive annual grantmaking activities and work to accelerate clinical trials, the LRA is bringing together the scientific community around a dozen exciting new research programs including the development of a biorepository and patient registry, a cloud-based data warehouse to map clusters of people living with lupus in the U.S., and two major initiatives to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in lupus research, treatment, and clinical trials.
The next President will be an experienced scientific and administrative leader who will champion the LRA’s mission, and deftly guide the organization’s growth and impact. The President will be a compelling ambassador, responsible for external relations and fundraising, while also overseeing administrative management for an increasingly complex entity. The President must have the interpersonal skills and knowledge base to develop authentic relationships and garner respect within medical and research communities, with patients and others affected by lupus, and with existing and potential supporters interested in its work. In collaboration with the Board of Directors, the President will ensure the LRA’s continued impact in the fight against lupus and will be responsible for setting the organizational strategic vision that allows the LRA to meet its mission.
