Director, Division of Cardiology
MetroHealth Medical Center

The Department of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center (MHMC) is seeking applications for the position of Director for the Division of Cardiology. Located in Cleveland, OH. MHMC seeks an experienced physician with a proven track record of building/growth and leadership. The Director will work collaboratively with the Chairperson, Department of Medicine, to enhance the clinical, educational, and scholarly missions of the Division and Department.

The Division of Cardiology is a full-service operation comprising both an inpatient and outpatient clinical presence. Sections include noninvasive cardiology with a robust imaging service, interventional with a brand-new structural heart program, and well-established programs in electrophysiology and heart failure. The inpatient arenas include a telemetry ward, cardiac intensive care unit, and active inpatient consultation services. There are two cardiac catherization labs and an electrophysiology lab. Outpatient clinics include both on-campus and outlying satellite clinics.

Faculty are engaged in the MHMC internal medicine residency program and the Cardiology fellowship programs. Fellowship programs include Cardiovascular Medicine (9 fellows) and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (2 fellows). Faculty have fulltime appointments at Case Western Reserve University.

Clinical and basic science research is an integral component of the Division with a track record of continuous NIH funding for over 20 years. The primary area of investigation involves the cellular and molecular mechanisms of arrhythmias and is highly translational.

A key area for attention will be preparation for moving into a new hospital structure scheduled to be occupied in the Fall 2022 and a new medical office building scheduled for completion by early 2023.

Specific Responsibilities:

The new Director:

  • Will be a practicing member of the Cardiology Division, leading by providing outstanding clinical care and service to patients and referring providers, and promoting clinical trial enrollment.
  • Will establish a faculty development plan that identifies faculty sub-specialty interests, strengths and capabilities that can lead to successful program development and professional growth
  • Recruitment and retention will be a priority as the Division is poised for growth
  • Will participate in the Department of Medicine's leadership team ensuring attainment of the department's goals and objectives
  • Will provide leadership of the Division's academic enterprise
  • Will enthusiastically support all Quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with all patient safety/risk management and compliance programs

Candidate Qualifications:

  • An M.D. or D.O. degree, ABIM board certification in Cardiovascular Medicine and an unrestricted Ohio state medical license
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a leadership role within an academic institution, having achieved or eligible for rank of Associate Professor or higher.
  • Possess a defined clinical niche with demonstration of past participation in scholarship and investigational activities
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills with the ability to advance and develop a superior clinical service in an academic setting
  • Effective supervisory skills, including clinical mentoring and coaching expertise
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in individual or group settings
  • Advocate for organizational values, quality, safety and commitment to religious, racial and gender equity, inclusion and diversity
  • Personal characteristics of integrity, maturity and compassion

The MetroHealth System is planning to redesign its campus with an innovative transformation plan to exceed the ever-changing needs of patients and programs for the community. This billion-dollar transformation is the largest public construction project in Cuyahoga County and one of the largest in the nation. By late 2022, the new hospital tower will be home to 270 private rooms with additional state-of-the art facilities, population health initiatives, as well as a re-imagined campus environment.
